Christmas markets are very popular all over the world. They have good food and hot wine punch to warm you from the inside. One Christmas market in Germany has a very unique attraction - a huge Christmas tree. Our German news team visited the tree – and actually went inside it.

The Ruhr in Germany has a few of Germany’s largest Christmas markets. Every year since 1996 this market has had a very special attraction - the world’s largest Christmas tree. One company that handles scaffoldings for bridges and buildings, got the unique assignment to construct a huge scaffolding structure for this Christmas tree. Then they placed 1,700 normal size trees around it.

[Hans-Werner Reckmann, Christmas Market Spokesperson]:
“We are here in the biggest Christmas tree of the world. It is recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records. It was built for the first time in 1996. Under the tree is an underground parking lot. And some hundred tons of weight lie on the ground here to hold the tree."

[Hans-Werner Reckmann, Christmas Market Spokesperson]:
“When I started organizing this Christmas market 40 years ago, we had about 40 vendors. This has changed over time, the booths have become nicer."

Now this market has 300 vendors. But the visitors don’t just want to see the tree. After a year of hard work, many Germans come with their friends or colleagues to drink a few cups of hot wine punch or dine on some traditional German dishes. And the vendors do their best to keep the visitors happy. This potato lady makes sure every potato served is very hot.

After their soccer practice, these teenage girls explored the whole Christmas market.

The German Christmas markets are open until Christmas, so there's still time to have some hot wine punch.
