The discontinuation of compulsory military service in Germany also means an end to a parallel system of civilian service by school-leavers. It will be replaced by a new voluntary system in July 2011.But it remains unclear whether the current 90,000 youngsters participating in the civilian service program can be completely replaced through the new scheme. We report on organizations that rely on the young helpers.
