India’s Orissa State's Name Changed to Odisha
  • 13 years ago
India's state of Orissa has a new name today. Now called Odisha, the change was cleared by the country's lower house of parliament. The name of Orissa was used by the British when they ruled India for 400 years.

On Tuesday, India's Lower House of Parliament passed a bill to change the name of Orissa state to Odisha, and the language from Oriya to Odia.

The federal government received a proposal from Orissa’s government in 2008… after a bill was passed in the state assembly.

The name of Orissa was created by the British when they controlled India.

But after India gained independence, many cities and states were renamed. Bombay was changed to Mumbai and Calcutta was changed to Kolkata, among others.
