Jakarta Officially Opens New Theatre

Indonesia opens a brand new theatre building in the capital Jakarta. Built to international standards, the theatre is expected to strengthen Jakarta’s image as a cultural center in Indonesia.

Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo officially opened the Jakarta Theatre building on October 30th with the bang of a drum.

[Fauzi Bowo, Jakarta Governor]:
"This is a new facility. I think this building is the first in Indonesia, which has the capacity and quality of an international theater. This statement is not from the head of the tourism department. It comes from the artiest who are very proud to be able to used this theatre.”

Located in the Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM) complex, the building reportedly conforms to international standards.This is reflected in its artistic shape, modern audio-visual systems, and on-stage hydraulic machinery to facilitate special effects during performances.

The theatre also provides 10 large dressing rooms each with an integrated bathroom, wardrobe and make-up station.The theatre’s three floors are air-conditioned and equipped with special seats for the comfort of audiences. Theatre capacity is about 1,500.

Special attention has been paid to sanitation facilities and access to the building for the physically disabled.

The theatre’s first show will be the musical drama “Step Earth and the Sun” featuring 250 artists.
