Dubai Metro: The World's Longest Automated Rail System

Today, many people prefer using the Metro in Dubai as a means of transportation, following the modern style of urban life.

The Dubai Metro opened on September 9, 2009. The trains are fully automated—that means no drivers.

[Mohamed Daaboul, Dubai Resident from Lebanon]:
You don't have to worry about rush hours. That's the most important thing especially in Dubai. To me it is so convenient especially if you have one car only. So we are two persons working. My wife uses the car, I use the metro. It's so convenient."

Residents of Dubai talk about the advantages of using the Metro. One-point-seven million passengers used the Dubai Metro in just its first month of operation.

The metro has also satisfied the expectations of some tourists.

[M.A Padminie, From Sri Lanka]:
"We will go travel and those are very nice and every 20 minutes we have the trains and everybody happy and everybody likes. And also no traffic and really enjoyed it also with people."

[Louis Ononiw, From Nigeria]:
"It is convenient, especially when I travel with a large family like I have. And I think you will be relaxed until you get to your destination without any question to ask of where is the next bus stop or the tisy person tries to spell things for you. You already know where you are going."

Dubai's ruler Sheikh Mohammed founded the Metro. The combination of a rapidly growing population, expected to reach 3 million by 2017, and severe traffic jams prompted the government to build and urban public transit rail system.

With 87 trains and nearly 50 miles of track, the Dubai Metro is the world's longest automated metro system.
