German Chancellor Angela Merkel will attend a memorial ceremony for the victims of the Love Parade disaster later.

She will be joined by Germany's president Christian Wulff at an ecumenical service at a church in Duisburg.

Panic broke out in a narrow tunnel that served as the only entrance to the techno festival in the north Germany city on July 24, leading to the deaths of 21 people.

Duisburg's mayor Adolf Sauerland, who has been heavily criticised in the wake of the tragedy, is not expected to attend the ceremony.

Tens of thousands of mourners who will follow the church service on video screens throughout the city.
