Shutdown Cripples Life in Indian Kashmir

The ongoing turmoil in Indian Kashmir has hit normal life due to frequent strikes, shutdowns and curfews in the region. Separatists called for shutdown in the region protesting the recent killings of youth who were shot down by police.

Ongoing strikes and a curfew in Indian Kashmir are affecting normal life in the region.

“The shutdown has a huge impact on the life of each and every person here. The poor are getting poorer due to the strikes.”

Worst affected are taxi drivers, fruit sellers and vegetable vendors, who earn their bread and butter on a daily basis.

“Everyday I loose 1,000 rupees because of the current situation.”

Separatists have called for the shutdown… protesting against the recent killings of youths who were shot by police.

Some amount of normalcy had returned to the Kashmir valley on Saturday after weeks of unrest.

But a curfew and similar restrictions were reinforced in most parts of Srinagar and some other parts of the valley after the separatist group the Hurriyat Conference, called for a new wave of shutdowns.
