The third annual festival of ancient Trypilian culture took place on the first weekend of July in a small village near Kyiv. Scientists believe that the Trypilian civilization existed in the territory of modern Ukraine more than 5 thousand years ago, and became the ancestor of present Ukrainian culture. The festival presents different crafts, and prohibits selling any alcoholic beverages or tobacco products.
This is the third annual Trypilian culture festival.
[Alexander, Volunteer]: (male, Ukrainian) “This is fighting with sacks. It is an ancient game, which was invented by Trypilians. There is a ditch filled with water, and two people try to push each other into it.”
[Valentina, Volunteer]: (female, Ukrainian) “Today we offer to make a doll from scraps of fabric. This is the most ancient toy. This is the first image that man saw in the reflection of the water, the reflection of himself and began to depict it. This cross is the symbol of sun and the harmonious combination of male and female."
Visitors can also learn how to make plates and dishes from clay.
[Ivan, Volunteer]: (male, Ukrainian) “We reconstruct the Trypilian oven. It took over five days to make it. For 12 hours, from 10 p.m. to 10 a.m., we burned it out at a temperature of 900 degrees Celsius."
Festival attendees can also eat different traditional food, drink tea from various herbs or simply relax, sitting on the grass.
The 4-days of festivities are attended by hundreds of people from all over Ukraine. Each year, organizers choose a symbol for the festival. This year it’s fire.
