David Cameron is calling US President Barack Obama later to discuss the BP oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico.

The two world leaders are expected to exchange views on the ongoing attempts to plug the well which is gushing oil into the sea at a rate of around 40,000 barrels a day.

The slick has grown to the largest in US history, with an estimated 21-46 million gallons now spilled.

BP have warned that it may not be completely contained until August. The BP share price has almost halved since the spill began on 20 April and fell to its lowest level since 1997 at one point on 10 June on fears that President Obama could impose huge penalties on the company.

Politicians stateside have repeatedly referred to BP as 'British Petroleum', even though the company has not used this name since 1998.
