Chinese and Japanese Leaders Discuss North Korea and Securit

Chinese Leader Wen Jiabao and Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama met in Tokyo on Monday (May 31) to discuss trade, economic and security concerns.

North Korea is likely to have factored into the talks.

Hatoyama has publicly backed South Korea’s contention that North Korea torpedoed its ship—the Cheonan—killing 46 sailors. Hatoyama is a firm supporter of the United Nations’ censure of North Korea.

As its communist ally, the Chinese regime has shied away from implicating North Korea in the sinking ship and it could use its veto power to block any U.N. Security Council action.

The two leaders signed a food safety agreement, following food-poisoning cases in Japan involving tainted Chinese-made frozen dumplings.

Disputes remain over the Chinese regime’s increasing nuclear weapons, naval activities and exploration for natural gas in the East China Sea, in areas that Japan says could impinge on gas fields under its maritime jurisdiction.
