Peter Mandelson has attacked the Tories for "running Britain down" and having no answers of their own to the problems of society.

The Conservative's plan to give people the power to improve their communities in tackling violence, anti-social behaviour, family breakdown, and poverty.

But Labour has fought back stating: "When people are faced with crime, with anti-social behaviour...they don't want to hear about the Tories' do-it-yourself approach".

Lord Mandelson said: "They want to know that the police, councils, public services will be there to help them."

To help prevent and solve crime, Labour have proposed to give people new rights to petition for CCTV cameras.

Acid attack victim, Katie Piper, supports the campaign and at the Labour press conference on safer communities, she defended the use of CCTV cameras.

""If you don't have anything to hide, you don't have anything to fear. Without CCTV my attackers could have walked free."

Alan Johnson vowed that a Labour Government would take "tough action" against problem families and under the community payback scheme, they would give communities a greater say in how offenders are dealt with.

He said: "We have to have effective policing in this country. Getting rid of CCTV doesn't strike me as the best way of doing so." And added that Conservatives were living in "La-La Land".
