Gurinder Chadha will be hoping to impress fans with her new film, It's a Wonderful Afterlife even if she admits the movie might not be what audiences expect.

The director said: "With this film I knew that it might take people by surprise, so very early on I wanted to put in a bit of guts and gore, because I wanted the audience to relax and just say 'ok, we get it, we know where this movie is going'."

It's a Wonderful Afterlife is the latest film from the woman behind Bend it Like Beckham. It is the story of an Asian mother, Mrs Sethi, who is desperate to marry off her only daughter. When her matchmaking efforts do not go quite according to plan, she kills off anyone who gets in her way. What Mrs Sethi does not bargain on is the spirits coming back to haunt her.

Newcomer Goldy Notay plays the lead, her leading man is played by Heroes actor Sendhil Ramamurthy. The film also stars award-winning actress Shabana Azmi.

"We had to stop every-so-often when someone recognised Shabana," Notay said.

Ramamurthy added: "She would get mobbed in Southall when we were shooting, she really would."

It's a Wonderful Afterlife is out now.
