Chris Evans added more drama to the rift between the BBC and Adrien Chiles with comments on his Radio 2 show.
Speaking to ex-rugby players Matt Dawson and Austin Healey, he joked he could get the pair screen tests to take over from Chiles as anchor of the nightly show.
Dawson responded saying he didn't want to be a warm-up act for Evans's friday night slot to which the broadcaster replied: "You are not the warm-up act for me. That is what the other guy thought and look what happened to him."
Chiles left the BBC to join ITV this week in a 1.5 million pound deal making him the face of GMTV and the channel's World Cup coverage.
It is believed Chiles had been angry that he had been dropped from the Friday night One Show for Evans in order to spice up BBC1's evening output.
A spokesperson for the BBC did say "Chris always comments on topics of the day."
