Czech Republic: Too Dangerous for Postmen | European Journal

Biting dogs are not the biggest problem. The postman has stopped coming to a particular neighborhood in the town of Bohumín. The postal service shelved deliveries after a postman was beaten into a coma. The district of Pudlov amounts to a Czech ghetto. Most people living here are members of the Roma community, one in every two are out of work. They were mobbed out of the city center, and banished to the outskirts, where no one can see them. The perpetual climate of humiliation has generated a great deal of aggression, which has been taken out on the postmen. But suspending deliveries is no solution. Some people are being made to wait for social welfare payments because an important letter has failed to arrive.
