Pakistanis Unaware of Taliban Presence in Karachi

Residents in Pakistan's commercial capital of Karachi were surprised on Tuesday that a Taliban leader had been caught in their city. Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar had been captured in Karachi in a joint raid by Pakistani and U.S. spy agencies.

Many Karachi residents are in disbelief.

[Allah Ditta, Local Resident]:
"Who says Taliban are here? There are no Taliban here (in Karachi). All of them are fighting there (in Afghanistan and northern Pakistan). That’s all baloney."

[Mohammad Gulfam, Local Resident]:
"There is no Taliban threat in Karachi. Taliban is not making any trouble here. The ones who are blowing up bombs here, are not the Taliban, they are others who are not Muslims. Muslims do not explode bombs."

The U.S. government hopes the capture of Baradar will at least temporarily weaken the Taliban-led insurgency in Afghanistan.
