Iran Security Forces Clash with Protestors at Anniversary

Yesterday marked the anniversary of the Iran Revolution. And a huge number of people filled the streets of Iran’s capital to mark the occasion. But many were there not to celebrate, but to protest the ruling regime.

Thursday was the 31st anniversary of the revolution that brought Iran’s Islamic republic into power.

State-run television showed hundreds of thousands of people gathering in central Tehran to mark the occasion.

But Iranian websites—and this amateur video posted on the Internet—highlighted widespread opposition to the ruling regime.

This Youtube video shows huge clouds of smoke billowing in the Iranian capital, as demonstrators chanted, “death to the dictator.”

And the security forces were out in droves. They fired teargas at the protestors—supporters of opposition leader Mirhossein Mousavi.

Mousavi lost in the presidential race last July in what many called fraudulent elections. Fraudulent or not, the issue was a catalyst. It sparked months of public outcry against the regime for long-suppressing people’s civil rights and basic freedoms.

Green ribbons like this one being tied to a subway pole are symbols of the opposition movement.

Most news coming out of Iran is hard to verify, because the government controls the media—and heavily restricts foreign journalists.
