The word Shema means to hear; to be absolutely blown away, utterly amazed, to have our breath taken away by our God. To hear means to act/obey on what you have heard. If you do not respond to what is being spoken then you have not “heard”. We are then commanded to be absolutely amazed by the love of God and to respond in kind to Him, by the giving of all our being to him in absolute surrender. It is interesting that the Shema found in Deut 6:4 precedes the greatest commandment; “Shema Yisrael, the Lord your God is One and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.” Yeshua prayed the we would be one as He and His Father are one and that the love that He had for His Father, that that same love would be in us. (John 17) God’s heart has been unveiled to us in the most lavish display of love by the giving of Himself to us.
