Should I Kill my Dog?

Should I kill my dog, or just let her die on her own? When your pet reaches the end... What should you do? My companion, Shasta, a 14 year old Australian Shepherd, is near the end. I've been advised to just put her down, before she dies on her own... What do you think? What would you do?
