Tourists surprised to find Eiffel Tower closed due to strike

The Eiffel Tower was shut by a one-day strike in Paris on Thursday, with the monument's workers joining a public sector strike and mass demonstrations in a renewed challenge to President Emmanuel Macron.

Tourists said they were disappointed by the beloved monument's closure, although some said they understand why demonstrators are taking to the streets.

The interior ministry said in the afternoon that 270,000 people had participated in protests around the country so far, excluding Paris, where the main demonstration started in the afternoon.

The nationwide protests and a strike by public workers, called by trade unions including the left-wing CGT and backed by student groups, come after demonstrations over living costs, public services and education triggered the worst civil unrest France has seen in years.
