00:02Thousands of students and supporters marched through central Copenhagen on Wednesday to
00:07protest proposed reforms to Denmark's student grant system.
00:11The government, led by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen's Social Democrats, plans to
00:16reduce grants for some students living at home if their household income exceeds a set
00:22threshold.
00:22I've come here today to protest against the government's decision to cut the issue on
00:29students in Denmark.
00:31It's very important for me that us, the young people of Denmark, have some money to maybe
00:37buy a bus card or live for without our parents needing to provide that money for us.
00:42I think that the government is trying to take this away from us.
00:46It's a huge problem for the future.
00:48Education is what Denmark is built on.
00:51We do not have oil in the ground, we do not have gold or silver or other valuable metals.
00:55We have smart people and we have education and that's why we need to invest in the education
01:00and the issue helps that it helps as many people as possible to get as good an education as possible.
01:07Student associations said about 40,000 students at 57 schools across Denmark went on strike over
01:14the proposed cuts.
01:15Since 1970, students aged 18 and above have automatically received allowances, regardless of their parents'
01:23income.
01:24The Higher Education Ministry estimates that 14,000 students could lose their grants, while
01:30another 8,000 would receive reduced payments.
01:32A final vote on the proposal will take place in December.
