The College Football Playoff selection committee revealed its first top 12, and 8-0 UCLA finds itself sitting at No. 8 behind two-loss Alabama and two-loss Texas. Brock Vereen and Alex Curry dig into the inconsistent logic being applied to the rankings, whether the committee actually watches all these games, and why Bob Chesney’s locker room will happily take this disrespect and use it as fuel down the stretch.

00:00It happened. The College Football Playoff Selection Committee showed their true colors yesterday and how they feel about UCLA.
00:10They do not respect UCLA as they debuted at number eight.
00:18Are we surprised? No. Are we disappointed? Yep.
00:24Let me run through the top. I'll do the top 12.
00:30Let's hear it. Miami at number one. Makes sense. Yes, it does. Georgia at number two.
00:37Yeah, sure. Utah at number three. Indiana at number four. Alabama with two losses at number five.
00:50That is a brand move right there. Kentucky at number six. Texas with two ugly losses at number seven above
01:04the undefeated Bruins at number eight who were 8-0.
01:10At nine, BYU. At 10, Ole Miss. At 11, Notre Dame. And at number 12, Ohio State.
01:19So when you first saw top 10, top 12, immediate reaction.
01:26So the committee is given a list of guidelines or metrics of what they are supposed to be judging these
01:35teams off of.
01:36Strength of schedule, head-to-head, common opponents, health of roster and coaches, meaning are the coaches leaving for other
01:44jobs?
01:44Are they still going to be there? Performance metrics, among some other things.
01:48The problem is the committee is not told what should be prioritized over the other.
01:55So from year to year or even times week to week, they can say, well, this week, head-to-head
02:02is what matters.
02:03And that's how we rank this team over this team.
02:05Well, this week, performance metrics matter.
02:08And did you win on the road? Do you play better at home and are bad on the road?
02:14Common opponents matter this week. Health matters at the end of the season.
02:17So because it is not set in stone, the priority of the metrics, they just get to be subjective and
02:27decide from week to week which team they want ranked above the other.
02:32The problem with these initial rankings is if you look at any of the metrics, it's not cohesive across the
02:39board.
02:41If wins matter, then how are there two lost SEC teams ahead of UCLA?
02:49If losses matter, then why are there two lost teams ahead of UCLA?
02:56If head-to-head matters, then why is it that Alabama is so far ahead of Tennessee?
03:03No matter what metric you use, it is immediately proven to be hypocritical when you look at these rankings.
03:11And I have never been more on the side of bring back the computer and let the computer figure things
03:19out because clearly the committee either cannot be trusted or just flat out does not watch these games.
03:28Yeah, that's tough because when you have not a clear set of standards of how you're going about and how
03:36you're ranking these schools, this is where it gets tricky.
03:41Because if you're able to decide, as you said, week to week, well, okay, head-to-head matters more or
03:48wins matter more than losses, that is a tough thing to look at.
03:53Because when you look at Texas right above UCLA, I do not understand how you can put Texas over UCLA
04:00when two of those losses were just abysmal losses.
04:06Yeah, they were. And the argument for Texas that the committee is probably going to share is Texas has three
04:18wins over currently top 13 ranked teams.
04:22But then that goes back to the point of, okay, so if we are prioritizing wins, there are other teams
04:28on this current ranking that don't make sense.
04:32And how do you then still punish the undefeated team?
04:35If wins matter more than losses, then by definition, the team that has not lost shouldn't be knocked, right?
04:44There's no cohesive way to explain their top 25.
04:50And not to take this a step further because we're not there yet, but if this playoff does expand to
04:5724 teams, which I'm firmly against,
05:00well, the committee is showing that they don't watch all of these games.
05:04The committee is athletic directors and former head coaches.
05:07Like, maybe it's unfair to assume that they're keeping tabs on these teams.
05:12But if you have to keep tabs on 25 teams in order to properly rank them,
05:17are we really going to believe that they're going to keep tabs on 40 teams in order to properly rank
05:22the 24?
05:22They're not watching all of these games.
05:25It is so unrealistic to ask them, to expect them year after year.
05:30We complain about how these rankings come out.
05:34It is so unrealistic to expect them to actually keep tabs on these teams.
05:38And I feel this is even further proof to expand the playoff, but that's a conversation for another day.
05:44The fact is, we are sitting here with a list of teams that is inexplicable other than we just like
05:52these teams better than the other ones.
05:53The good news for UCLA and Bob Chesney and his team is this feeds right into, I feel like, his
06:00narrative
06:00and what he's been pitching all season of we are the underdogs.
06:03And if you've watched any of his, like, pregame speeches before they run out onto the field, like,
06:07this is going to fuel them in a way that feels dangerous but exciting because it kind of is coming
06:16at the perfect time
06:16with the last four games of the regular season.
06:19And we had Sammy Omicigo, linebacker and captain on UCLA's football team on the show yesterday.
06:27And when I asked him if they were going to be watching the college football ranking show,
06:32he actually had a very interesting response.
06:37The college football ranking show is happening tonight.
06:40It is dropping tonight.
06:41Is that something you guys are paying attention to and you're going to be watching?
06:45Yeah, we might watch it.
06:46But our coach says the most useless stat is the number beside your name, you know,
06:52because every week the goal is for other players to remove it.
06:57So our goal is to focus on what we can show, focus on the opponent, and everything else takes care
07:02of itself.
07:03Bob calls the rankings the most useless stat by your name.
07:08So he's just going to use this as fuel.
07:10Like, we're going into your alma mater.
07:14We know it's an early game.
07:17And there was concern heading into that game this weekend because the Gophers are a team that,
07:23what would you say, like, you fear them, but what was the line you said?
07:28They have three ranked wins on the year.
07:31They may not play consistent ball, but they have a knack for just ruining other team seasons,
07:37of which they've already started throughout this season.
07:40Yeah, like, you never know what you're going to get, but you know you're going to get a couple upsets
07:44out of them.
07:44There you go.
07:45So with UCLA heading in undefeated, there was kind of that, like, ooh, is this the one?
07:51It's a body clock, as you call it, 9 a.m. start for UCLA.
07:56But I think after getting this kind of a public snub across the nation of everyone going like,
08:04oh, okay, you don't respect us still?
08:06This is their opportunity to go in and have a statement game.
08:09Yeah, and if a coach says, you know, we don't pay attention to rankings, we don't pay attention to this,
08:17that's more so catered toward the teams that are ranked at the top because you don't want your team,
08:22say you're Georgia because their head coach Kirby Smart is notorious for this.
08:28You don't want your team walking in the locker room saying we're the number two team in the country
08:32because you want a chip on your shoulder.
08:34And if you start thinking that your poop doesn't stink, then all of a sudden that edge leaves.
08:39And you want that edge.
08:40So Bob Chesney is going to embrace this ranking because it can be used as fuel.
08:46Like you said, it is proof that the country doesn't respect it, that the committee doesn't respect you.
08:52And even when you bring in USC to this, they're letting it be known that a three-loss SEC team
09:01is probably going to make it to the CFP.
09:04Probably going to make it.
09:06A two-loss Big Ten team is going to be a long shot to make it.
09:12So if you are UCLA, if you are USC, you have to win out.
09:16You have to make it to the Big Ten Championship because that's basically a guarantee that you're going to get
09:22in.
09:22And the beauty of it for both of those teams is everything you want is still ahead of you.
09:29Fifteen ranked matchups remain.
09:31Seven of them come this Saturday.
09:32UCLA very much could enter the top five going into next Tuesday because of how many ranked matchups that we
09:42are going to see.
09:43So on one hand, you're annoyed and you're upset, and I totally get that.
09:51I'm upset for UCLA.
09:52But you have Miami playing Notre Dame.
09:55You have Texas playing Mizzou.
09:57You have Alabama playing LSU.
09:59Ole Miss has a ranked matchup against Georgia.
10:03So all you have to do is keep winning.
10:06UCLA is firmly in line where they need to be to make it to the CFP.
10:11USC, as a matter of fact, is also in line to make the CFP because of the chaos above them.
10:16But it is unfortunate that you just never want to feel like your hard work is not being rewarded.
10:22And that's what the Big Ten as a whole feels right now, other than Indiana, who somehow snuck their way
10:26into the top five.
10:27So the more I hear you explain all of this, it's like I'm not upset.
10:33Disappointed is a good word to use for the committee.
10:37However, this is the perfect fuel for UCLA down the stretch.
10:42Use it as fire.
10:43This is exactly what you needed.
10:45Kind of like you see the light at the end of the tunnel of like, okay, we can do something
10:50historic this year.
10:52Don't take your foot off the gas and just full speed ahead.
10:56To get snubbed like this, to have a two-loss team right ahead of you, like this is exactly what
11:02you need.
11:02Yeah.
11:03Especially for Bob Chesney.
11:04And we know the pump-up speeches and motivation, as we just heard Samio share.
11:08It's like, nah, people are trying to knock that number off next to your name.
11:12That does not matter.
11:13What matters is winning.
11:14At the end of the day, there are three undefeated teams remaining in power football.
11:18Miami, Utah, UCLA.
11:21Miami and Utah got rewarded.
11:23UCLA got left out.
11:25USC, on the other hand, just proved that they can beat the number two team in the country.
11:29So there's no reason they can look at their schedule and say, we can beat anyone remaining.
11:34Bummed for the LA teams, but excited on how they're going to fuel this into motivation.
11:39Yeah.
11:40So excited.
11:41And like extra excited for the matchup this weekend.
11:44Are you going to share which side you're taking yet?
11:48I mean, UCLA has been your homer team all year, but they're playing Minnesota, your alma mater.
11:53There will be merch worn on Friday.
11:56There will be merch worn on Friday, people.
11:59Let's go.
11:59I can't wait.
