In the 1890s, Russian scientist Ivan Pavlov studied the digestive systems of dogs. During his research, he noticed something fascinating that changed psychology forever. The lab dogs began to salivate before their food was even served. They drooled just by seeing the lab coats of the assistants who fed them.

Pavlov decided to test this reaction using a metronome and a bell. Every time he gave the dogs meat powder, he sounded the tone first. He repeated this process many times until the animals linked the sound directly with food. Eventually, ringing the bell made the dogs salivate instantly, even with no food in sight.

This famous experiment proved the concept of classical conditioning. It showed that automatic biological responses can be triggered by learned triggers. Today, this discovery helps explain human habits, phobias, and emotional reactions.
