The Bharatiya Janata Party launched a day-long conclave titled 'Wounds of 1984' in Punjab, coinciding with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's election campaign visit to Sangrur. The event commemorated the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, gathering survivors, victims' families, and legal voices to demand accountability and justice. Accompanied by a photographic exhibition put together by H.S. Phoolka and Aparna Singh, the conclave aimed to educate the younger generation regarding the violence and questioned the Congress party's record on justice. The counter-offensive follows a recent BJP pad yatra held in the national capital to mark the anniversary of the riots. India Today correspondent Kamaljeet Sandhu reported that the BJP is seeking to expand its political footprint in Punjab by challenging both the Congress and the ruling Aam Aadmi Party ahead of elections. Meanwhile, Congress leaders claimed the principal electoral contest in the state remains between the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party.

00:00And some more news coming in on one hand. Rahul Gandhi is in Sangroor in Punjab for the Punjab elections
00:06campaigning for the Congress Party.
00:07On the other hand, the BJP has launched a counter campaign. This is a day-long conclave has been launched
00:15by the BJP, which is to commemorate the anti-Sikh riots of 1984.
00:20So it's titled Wounds of 1984. And this is the BJP's big anti-Sikh riots conclave, which is being held
00:29in Punjab.
00:29BJP puts clear on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots just before the elections.
00:35And this is a campaign against the Congress Party. And the anti-Sikh riots victims' families are attending this BJP
00:42conclave.
00:42It's a day-long conclave. And the BJP has named it Wounds of 1984.
00:46Legal voices, survivors and victims have gathered at this BJP event.
00:51Remember, this comes just days after there was a padhyatra, which was taken out by the BJP on November 1st
00:56to commemorate the anniversary of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
00:59It was also a counter rally to the Ramlila Maidan rally of the opposition.
01:04And now today, it's holding a day-long conclave in Punjab on the very day when Rahul Gandhi himself is
01:10in the state.
01:16BJP has organized a conclave on 1984 riots. And they're saying, why is Congress not talking about insaf or justice
01:25to 1984 victims?
01:27Now, we saw both these parties against each other, especially when Congress Party had organized the India Block Delhi Chalo
01:36rally in Ramlila Maidan.
01:38But now again, they have now initiated this particular photo exhibition, a day-long conclave in 1984.
01:46And this is where what we'll try and show you is the pictures being put up here.
01:52HS Fulka and Aparna Singh are the ones who have put together this photo exhibition of 1984 riot victims.
02:00And this is where BJP upping the ante against Congress Party.
02:04Now, on its own part, the Congress is saying that BJP, even if combined with Akali Dal, is not even
02:12in competition.
02:12That the real competition is between the Ahmadi Party and the Congress.
02:17This actually doesn't leave BJP out.
02:20BJP, on the other hand, we've seen in the past few days, has pushed Ahmadi Party MLAs.
02:27Early in April, we saw seven Rajya Saba members move from Ahmadi Party towards the Safran Party.
02:33But here, this is the time where election season seems to be peaking just before Diwali.
02:39And what we see is an exhibition and raising of issue of the 1984 victims.
02:46With camera person Gunji, this is Kamal Reet Sandhu in Chandigarh for India Today.
02:51There is a lot of people who have been in the past few days.
03:41And my colleague Kamaljeet Sandhu is now joining us with more details on this.
03:46Kamaljeet, just days after we saw BJP's anti-Sikh riot, Paddyatra, in the national capital now,
03:51they have launched a day-long conclave on the same issue on the very day when Rahul Gandhi is in
03:56the state.
03:57Is this the BJP's strategy? Is this how they are going to counter the Congress Party's election campaign?
04:03In what is the high-octane elections in Punjab,
04:06the NIEs are definitely out as far as Congress as well as BJP are concerned now.
04:11Remember, Infast Rally is the one which was initiated by Congress Party.
04:15And before that, we've seen how BJP had actually gone to Khandroor and had talked about Nasa Mukti Yatra,
04:21they've been talking about law and order and drugs issues.
04:24This is something which has been raised even by Congress Party.
04:27But in another note, what we see is that BJP is trying to corner the Congress Party,
04:32especially with issues of 1984 Sikh riots.
04:35And this is where they say they want justice for them.
04:38And that is the core agenda of insaf, quote-unquote.
04:41And that is where what we see is a bitter war of words between the Congress Party and the BJP.
04:47Now, these are two opponents even on the national front.
04:49But back here, BJP is trying to actually corner in and become a major player as far as Punjab is
04:56concerned.
04:57Remember, there are just about two members out of 117 constituencies.
05:01Congress is at 18.
05:03So they're trying to actually establish themselves and obviously corner the Congress Party, especially on major issues.
05:11All right, Kamal Ji.
05:12Thank you for those details.
05:13So that's essentially what the BJP has strategized.
05:16They will be using the anti-Sikh riots of 1984 as a counter to the Congress Party's election campaign in
05:23Punjab.
05:24In fact, today, a day-long conclave is also being held in the state.
