00:00The blue wave is real. Democrats have just taken back both houses of Congress.
00:05In a single night, voters flipped the Senate and the House and handed President Donald Trump a Congress run by
00:12his opponents.
00:14The Associated Press has projected that Democrats will control the House after the party passed the 218 seats it needs
00:20for a majority.
00:22And in the Senate, Democrats flipped seven Republican seats in Iowa, Kansas, Maine, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, and Texas.
00:33Before election night, Republicans held the Senate 53 to 47. Democrats needed a net gain of four seats. They flipped
00:42seven.
00:43The first flip came fast. In North Carolina, former Governor Roy Cooper beat Michael Watley, the Trump-backed former Republican
00:51National Committee chairman.
00:53Then came the shockers. In South Carolina, Democrat Annie Andrews defeated Darlene Graham, the sister of the late Senator Lindsey
01:02Graham.
01:02That seat had been in Republican hands since 1964. The last Democrat to win a Senate race there was Fritz
01:11Hollings in 1998.
01:14In Kansas, Democrat Adam Hamilton beat Republican Senator Roger Marshall, the party's first Senate win in the state since 1932.
01:23In Maine, Democrat Troy Jackson ousted five-term Republican Senator Susan Collins, a moderate Democrat that tried and failed to
01:31beat for years.
01:32In Ohio, Democrat Sherrod Brown completed a comeback, beating Republican Senator John Husted two years after losing the state's other
01:42Senate seat.
01:43And in Iowa, Democrat Josh Turek beat Republican Ashley Hinson in the race to replace retiring Senator Joni Ernst, arguing
01:51that tariffs and diesel prices were hurting his state.
01:55Texas was the biggest earthquake of all.
01:57Democrat James Tallarico beat Ken Paxton, the Trump-backed attorney general, in the most expensive Senate race in American history.
02:06And in an even bigger shock, Democrat Gina Hinojosa beat three-term Republican Governor Greg Abbott.
02:13Texas had not elected a Democrat to statewide office since 1994.
02:19In Michigan, Democrat Abdul El-Sayed beat Republican Mike Rogers and will become the country's first Muslim senator.
02:28So why did it happen?
02:30Exit polls showed broad dissatisfaction with the country's direction, with the economy, and with the president's job performance.
02:37Voters named inflation, tariffs that pushed up prices, the war with Iran, and the boom in artificial intelligence data centers
02:45as reasons for their anger.
02:46Money did not save the Republicans either.
02:51Elon Musk poured $168 million into two Texas super PACs backing Paxton and still lost.
03:01The president's own picks backfired again and again.
03:05Candidates he handpicked, from Paxton in Texas to Mike Collins in Georgia, lost.
03:12Even the redistricting gamble failed.
03:14Democrats held at least eight of the 15 districts Republicans targeted and picked up seats in California and Utah.
03:22Just after 10.30 at night, he posted that he was not on the ballot, and if he was, he
03:27would have won in a landslide.
03:29He later told Fox News the losses were only a little surprise, and blamed the candidates, not his agenda.
03:36So what changes now?
03:38Hakeem Jeffries, the House Democratic leader, is now on the path to become the first black Speaker of the House.
03:46A Democratic Congress can block the president's legislation, launch investigations, and force a very different final two years of his
03:54second term.

04:09The count is not finished.
04:11In Mississippi, the Senate race is still too close to call, and some House races are still being counted.
04:16But one thing is already clear.
04:19America has changed direction.
