The Morning Shift breaks down Michael Penix Jr.’s four-interception performance in the Atlanta Falcons' tough loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Beau Morgan and Mike Johnson dive into the film to analyze Penix's decision-making, footwork, and why he seemed to lose all confidence as the game unraveled in the elements. Plus, they discuss whether the Falcons should even consider a quarterback change and what Penix must prove to solidify himself as the long-term franchise quarterback in Atlanta.

00:00So Bode, would I be right in saying that,
00:03and I said this to Grant in the post game yesterday,
00:05I almost sensed a little bit of emotion in Mike.
00:08You know, he talked about having family in attendance down in Tampa.
00:12I think that there was a lot of probably self-reflection going on.
00:15I know he just came off the field when he was talking to you guys,
00:17but I could almost sense like a, as he talked his way through it,
00:22that he was kind of realizing in the moment, like, man, that really,
00:24that sucked.
00:27It's hard to tell with Mike sometimes.
00:31You know, he, it's hard to tell sometimes, to be honest with you.
00:37And, you know, I don't know what to make of that at times.
00:39I think he was very honest about his play.
00:44It felt like to me in that interview, you know, standing there,
00:48and now it's hard to hear every single thing that is said in those interviews
00:52because of how we're doing them.
00:55But I did think he understood that he didn't play well
01:00and that he was responsible for, again, it was a total team loss,
01:07but he was responsible for a good bit of that loss with his play
01:10because he couldn't.
01:11And, look, the one thing that I noticed is you go through the interceptions, right?
01:19And the first one I thought was, I got to give it to the defense.
01:23It's a really tough spot for the quarterback.
01:26You account for the Anzalone.
01:27You account for him on the line of scrimmage.
01:29It's just like with Kendall Daniels last week against Purdy.
01:32You account for him at the line of scrimmage, and then he drops late.
01:35And if you don't – if you got to just get in the back of your drop
01:44and just turn and throw, you might not see him
01:46because you've not accounted for him to be there.
01:48You accounted for him to be on the line, and he's coming, right?
01:52And that's one of the reasons why you probably threw the ball as quick as you did.
01:55The second one was a very poor decision because it was a late throw in the middle,
01:59and you can't do that.
02:00The linebackers have gotten their depth at that point.
02:03If you're late with that throw, you know this more than anybody.
02:07As much as anybody, that's going to happen.
02:09The third one, you don't even set your feet.
02:10It's basically a punt.
02:12But if you set your feet and throw that football, you might have threw Drake open.
02:18And the win doesn't help.
02:19And then the fourth one was just a debacle.
02:21It was awful.
02:21It was a terrible decision.
02:23You got Drake running a little like a post in the middle of the field down there
02:26in the red area, and you throw up a duck.
02:29And I went through those to go through that you could see that confidence was gone
02:35at that point.
02:36He didn't have any confidence in himself.
02:38It appeared that there wasn't any confidence in what he was doing
02:42or what he was seeing late in that game because he was making throws that,
02:49you know, we've become accustomed to seeing when he's playing with confidence,
02:53he'll drop back and rip it in there.
02:55Yeah.
02:55And he wasn't doing that.
02:57Yeah.
02:57And, look, I know the win with those 21-mile-hour gusts.
02:59I talked about it at some point in pregame.
03:02I could see the flag.
03:05I'm looking across the stadium, and there's three or four flags.
03:08One of them is an American flag.
03:09It's the biggest one of them.
03:10It's a state flag and, like, a Tampa flag or whatever.
03:12And that flag was moving constantly.
03:16That wind was coming in, and then it gets into that stadium,
03:19and it swirls, right, because of the way stadiums are made.
03:21So that did have an effect, but he's got to – you know, I remember going back to –
03:28do you remember the story when they went and visited him in Washington
03:31with Terry and Raheem, and they're like, hey –
03:33Actually, Garrett Chapman brought that up to me because he was producing this weekend.
03:36He's on the – you know, he's out there, and it's a windy day.
03:40It's bad weather, and he's just ripping balls out there and just throwing dimes.
03:45And you're like, well, where was that – and look, it's tough.
03:50Your feet are wet.
03:51The footing is bad.
03:55Okay.
03:57You're not the only person who's playing those conditions,
03:59and I just feel like Mike lost confidence in what he was doing in this game
04:03as the game went on.
04:05And to me, you saw that in the decisions and the throws that he made.
04:09Now, if you think that's me sugarcoating, then kick rocks.
04:12I'm just telling you what exactly – what I saw.
04:15Because I – people are going to take that as, oh, you're making excuses.
04:19Well, no, I'm not.
04:20The guy just played with zero confidence late in the football game,
04:23and it showed to me, and it showed in his decision-making and his throws,
04:27and it showed in his post-game thing that he was sitting there saying,
04:32I've got to be better, and I think part of that is when you lose confidence
04:35as a young player, you don't do the things you need to do.
04:38Well, let's hear from Michael Penix.
04:40He was talking with Arch after the game about this game hurting
04:44but not rattling his confidence.
04:45No, it hurt because I'm back at home, and I was in front of a whole bunch of family.
04:49But outside of that, man, it's football.
04:53You're going to have good days.
04:53You're going to have bad days.
04:54I'm going to shake back for sure.
04:56That's kind of the cut that we – obviously Grant and I playing in a postgame,
05:00kind of listening to that going, man, he sounds a little emotional.
05:04And here's what I'll say about Mike because he's going to be a massive part
05:06of this conversation, and quarterbacks are always going to be part of that.
05:11If you think he needs to be replaced, the answer to that is no.
05:15With who right now?
05:16Well, and I know there's been back and forth to a conversation.
05:20I know that Stake put that out on Twitter.
05:22Maybe Tua needs to play.
05:23Guys, I've been saying this since February, and you know what I'm going to say.
05:27There is one goal.
05:28There is one goal.
05:30There is one goal for this football team.
05:33And if you say, well, I don't need to see any more Michael Penix.
05:36I know what he is.
05:37He was the NFC offensive player of the week last week, right?
05:40We know what Mike is.
05:42He's not the guy.
05:43Dude, that's just not the thing.
05:45Now, on the flip side of that, said this last week in a win.
05:50I'm going to say it again in a bad loss.
05:52At some point, if the fan base or anybody involved is going to get behind Michael Penix
05:58as a long-term solution at quarterback, he is going to have to win a football game.
06:03As the quarterback, when everything else goes sideways.
06:06Well, we said it in pregame.
06:07Yes.
06:08He's got to go out and win when everything else goes sideways.
06:12And when things go sideways for Mike, he has not been good.
06:15When everything else around him is good, he has been great.
06:17Borderline elite.
06:19But he just doesn't operate at a level that allows him to elevate the team
06:25when he is the one playing well and everybody else is kind of collapsing.
06:28And so that's going to be part of the conversation.
06:31It's unfortunate because I think he's a good player.
06:35But stylistically, and I've said this a number of times,
06:37it's hard for me to see the pass stylistically.
06:40I believe in quarterbacks that can move around.
06:42I believe in quarterbacks.
06:43And he did.
06:44He picked up a couple of first downs of his leg.
06:45A couple of quarterback sneaks.
06:46Had a scramble.
06:47Love to see it.
06:49But he does not move in the pocket with a sense of urgency.
06:52His feet got lazy once again yesterday.
06:55Led to some lazy flat throws that had no arm, no drive behind them.
06:59And they get picked off.
07:00And I'm with you.
07:02Tough conditions.
07:03Couldn't grip the football, whatever it may be.
07:05I said this to Grant in the postgame.
07:07You know who didn't have any issues gripping the football?
07:09Alex Anzalone.
07:10Zion McCollum.
07:11And the rest of the Tampa defense.
07:13Because when you pick it off four times in the rain,
07:15they're catching the ball fine.
07:17Again, I think I've said multiple times,
07:19they played in the same conditions.
07:21The conditions, it's why I brought up the Washington visit
07:27where when they came up there to visit him.
07:30And I was like, to me, this was a game built for his arm.
07:34I even said it to somebody on the field before the game.
07:36I was talking to somebody.
07:37And we were talking about the weather.
07:40And I said, well, good thing the quarterback's got a cannon for an arm.
07:47Big hands.
07:50Dude, the guy can sling it.
07:52I mean, he's got as good of an arm.
07:55He's got a top five arm in football right now.
07:57Remember what my second key to victory was on the pregame show yesterday?
08:01Make Baker prove he can throw it.
08:03He didn't have to throw it last week.
08:05Two for 60 yards.
08:06Make Baker prove he can throw it.
08:07Get up early.
08:08Play well in the first quarter.
08:10And make Baker prove he can throw it.
08:12He's seven for 14 with one touchdown pass, I think, in the last two games.
08:17And they've won both games by double digits.
08:21Yeah, I believe it.
08:22You have to understand, though, where their fan base is very confused by Michael Penix as a player.
08:27Yeah, I agree.
08:28So we got a message from DM3 that I think says it perfectly.
08:32He's inconsistent.
08:33It's been like that since he was drafted.
08:35Wins a game he is supposed to.
08:36Loses and then loses a game he's supposed to win.
08:38And so it's just back and forth, back and forth.
08:40Like, it's maddening to try to figure out where you settle on Michael Penix and who he is.
08:46Here's how I have come to terms with it.
08:49It's about being well-rounded as a quarterback, being able to do a little bit of everything.
08:53I don't think that's him.
08:54I think he does.
08:55I think he throws the ball and expands the field and gets the ball vertical extremely well at an elite
09:02level.
09:03Some of the things he doesn't do well.
09:05And that's why we always talk about styles make fights.
09:07In certain styles, he is unbelievable.
09:08In other styles, not so good.
09:12So there's two ways to look at it.
09:14There's the one fact, or the one side where you say, well, he's young and inconsistency is a trait of
09:20most young quarterbacks.
09:22Where they're going to have good weeks, they're going to have bad weeks.
09:24How do you rebound off of the bad ones and how do you build on the good ones is what
09:30kind of goes into figuring out if you're the guy or not.
09:33Then there's the other side that is, he is a gunslinger body with the arm, but is the gunslinger mentality
09:47in him.
09:49And what I mean is like, if a gunslinger, to me, is a guy that can drop back, will fire
09:59it, will trust his arm almost to a fault, but if it turns out bad, the next play he's on
10:09the field, it's completely out of his mind.
10:12It's this ability to just completely flush out that last play.
10:22And yesterday, it didn't appear that he had that.
10:26He did after the first interception.
10:30But after the second one, it felt like that mentality went away a little bit.
10:37And then by the end of the game, I felt like he was completely out of that mentality.
10:43And he was in this thought process of, I've got to be overly protective with the football now.
10:49And I'm like, well, at this point, now you need to be slinging it.
10:52Because you don't have that luxury anymore to be kind of safe.
