00:08hi I'm Benjamin you're backstage at the Alice and Olivia show spring 2013 we're
00:14doing a kind of 1950s inspired loose sort of lived-in ponytail nice and low
00:22with a bit of texture through the top so here we go I'm just gonna damp it down a
00:27little before I put product in there so it disperses nicely for this look the root
00:34movement is really important so I'm going to use a bit of l'oreal professional lift
00:38extreme just to make sure that I get those roots all moving in the correct
00:42place so I'm spraying in around the part and then all around the hairline
00:56I'm just sectioning off the back here to make my life a bit easier once I get that
01:01all clean lead light into my ponytail then I can just work on making sure that my
01:05root movement all through the front is nice and flowing and keeping it all kind
01:09of fresh and loose now I'm just using a flat brush because I want to keep you
01:17know a bit of texture in here I don't want to I don't want to be blow drying it all
01:22too smooth you know I think that when it's all too dressed and too done you lose
01:27that kind of do-it-yourself element which keeps it modern
01:36so at this point I'm just blowing everything back to where the ponytail is
01:40going to be then just when I work on the front I'm just going to clip this hair
01:48away allowing it to sort of cool down and set where I want it to go with these
01:56side sections we're going to blow them straight down I just want it to feel as
02:00natural as possible as it flows backwards and then again with half our
02:05top section we want to just blow it straight T to the part so it comes
02:10straight towards you away from that now I guess for people doing this at home this
02:15is sort of the most important section our top section coming off our car really
02:21should to be divided into three different sections so you want to take your
02:26section come and put in a little triangle just on the top here and you clip that bit
02:33away now your back section needs to come straight out this way and then your front
02:44section will go straight out that way okay and then the same on this side we want to go
02:49straight down you can see how this root movement fans all the way around that's why it's really
02:55important to have something in there that's going to really hold those roots in place
03:02so depending on the thickness of the hair I'm just going to put a little teasing under here just so
03:08that it doesn't split over the ear like that and so you don't see the ear coming through
03:28and then I'm using a clear elastic because I don't want to have too much identity based on how the
03:35ponytail's fixed this is definitely something that should almost go unnoticed so just to help hold
03:45the curl and as a good working hair spray I'm using the L'Oreal Professionnel infinium number two and then
03:52I'm flat wrapping the curl around the iron but not all the way up you know just to get that
04:02little accent on the end
04:05so I just like to hold the curl and let it cool down in the shape that I want it
04:09to set because the
04:13the hair really sets as it goes through those two transitions between hot and cold and between wet and
04:19dry so as you're using a hot tool it's just as important to be aware of what's happening with the
04:26hair once you've taken a hot tool off it so here's our nice curl in the bottom of our pony
04:32but for me this
04:32is a little weak I like the way that in the 50s the hair was just thicker and fuller and
04:39it seemed
04:39almost a bit wiggy to today's standards but I kind of like that kind of fullness so I'm gonna go
04:45through
04:45the pony and just tease a little bit of bulk into it
05:01okay so once I've got that I just go over it with a small brush to just take out all
05:09the surface teasing
05:15I know that I want this to sort of look a little lived in I just work a tiny bit
05:20of product through
05:21my palm and then just kind of pat it in around the top just to give it that sort of
05:28you know almost a
05:30day-old sort of feel and then I'll run it over the pony just to sort of hold all those
05:36little hairs down
05:38and make sure we kind of clean it up after that teasing okay so here's our little 1950s inspired
05:44ponytail with our little do-it-yourself top bit I guess thanks for joining me backstage at the Alice
05:52and Olivia Spring 2013 show see ya
