If the Charles James exhibition is any indication, we'd better buckle down for a ladylike spring. I can get way into a prim outfit — if it's still got edge. One of my favorite ways to keep things fairly feminine without looking like I was dressed by Mom is to work pleats into a look. Not only are they a great alternative to ruching (good riddance!), but they also make it easy to play with the length of a skirt or dress while still keeping things classy. Above, three pleated looks I love that you should copy now.

00:14Hi, I'm Annie Georgia Greenberg, senior style editor of Refinery29, and today on Trend Takeout, we're talking pleats and thank
00:20you.
00:21Micro pleats are back in a huge way, so you should invest in an A-line skirt because it's a
00:25perfectly feminine way to pull them off with a crop top and heels.
00:32This second skirt plays with wider pleats, which allows you to take the hemline up a little bit, as well
00:37as add volume and print.
00:38Then you can play with the styling by mixing in a t-shirt or blouse.
00:48Pleats aren't just a daytime thing.
00:50They work perfectly well for a night, like in this maxi dress that you can totally wear to a wedding,
00:54and they're a perfect alternative for ruching.
00:56Now you have three great ways to walk to the pleat of your own drum.
01:01See you next time.
01:02.
