00:07I would have been the first woman executed since World War II in the state of Mississippi.
00:13Believe it or not, I was at peace.
00:15And my last words, forgive them for they know not what they do.
00:21For 15 years, Michelle Byram sat on death row for the murder of her husband.
00:30So there is a lot of evidence that suggests that Michelle Byram is innocent because her son has admitted and
00:37confessed to the killing of his father.
00:40He said that he was abusive.
00:42My conviction was overturned within just hours of my execution.
00:48I was in the shower and I came out of the shower and the other girl on death row, she's
00:53right next door to me.
00:54And she said, Michelle. I said, what? She said, you're on the news. I said, yeah, okay.
01:03She said, you're not going to die.
01:08But before the murder and the trial, another crime took place.
01:12My husband sexually and physically and mentally abused me.
01:16I left several times and he always found me.
01:20And when he found me, the beatings, they were bad.
01:2585 to 90 percent of women in prison have suffered domestic violence.
01:30I'm not the only one and I know there's women out there in the same situation.
01:36And it's not because we don't try to get away.
01:40The closest shelter to Michelle was an hour away.
01:44She was trapped.
01:45We get to where we start believing in what they tell us.
01:55That we are nothing.
02:02And we will continue to be nothing.
02:05And that nobody else will want us.
02:10And that we are better off where we are.
02:12We're safer where we are.
02:15And there's nothing we can do.
02:21And there's no place we can go.
02:25Michelle's ordeal is finally over.
02:28So as a free woman, what does she want?
02:32I've been wanting to go to Outback Steakhouse.
02:35I've heard so much about the Outback.
02:36And I thought about, yeah, I need to have a Bloomin' Onion.
02:41Let's just say you don't know what freedom is until it's gone.
02:45Because you can't take it all in until you don't have it.
02:49Getting up and getting a drink of water when you want to, that's freedom.
02:52You don't know what it is until it's gone.
02:56Wait a minute, now you're going over a big bump.
02:58A big dip.
02:59If you want your purse too, you'll have to show an ID to get a drink.
03:03I don't have an ID.
03:05Surely they can look at you and tell you over there.
03:13Oh, look at there.
03:17Thank you all for this Bloomin' Onion.
03:20Okay, is there any special way we have to do this?
03:22I think you just pull it and dip it if you want.
03:25Go for it.
03:25Let's try this.
03:29Good day.
03:30Good day folks.
03:32Good day mate.
03:34Good day mate.
03:36Good day mate.
03:36Good day.
03:38Good day.
03:38My whole life has been one hell of a story.
03:41And I've made it through.
03:43If it wasn't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all.
03:46But I come out smelling like a rose.
03:48Amen sister.
03:49I don't know.
03:50I'm so sorry.
03:50Okay, I can do it.
