00:00How many Americans are killed per day by guns?
00:03One hundred Americans.
00:05The Cameron Boyce Foundation recently launched a powerful campaign to end violence
00:10called Wielding Peace.
00:12The project is a collection of images that feature people from all walks of life
00:16wielding guns.
00:17The catch is the guns they are using as props
00:20are everyday items that signify unity and peace.
00:23This project is to serve as a reminder that as a society
00:26we need to choose a different weapon.
00:28Today's Bay of the Day is Cameron Boyce,
00:32who is an actor and a social justice advocate
00:35that raised his voice for many causes.
00:37Today we have the chance to talk to two people honoring his legacy.
00:41Cameron's cousin, Taryn Dudley, who also served as a creative director for the project,
00:46and Casey Kitchen, who is Cameron's publicist
00:49and currently helps run the foundation with his parents.
00:52Hey guys!
00:54Hi!
00:55Nice to see you guys both.
00:57How did Cameron come up with the idea for this project and why was it so close to his heart?
01:04There are so many mass shootings happening and school shootings
01:07and I think he thought, when is enough enough?
01:10He was such a philanthropist and an advocate for the greater good.
01:13He saw what kind of a following he had, what kind of a footprint he had created just on social
01:18media alone
01:18when he wanted to utilize his own creative skills to figure out how to bring peace in the world
01:25and how to advocate for stricter gun laws.
01:27Taryn is his cousin and she's a brilliant photographer for building peace.
01:32And so I know the two of them worked very closely in terms of what they wanted the aesthetic to
01:36look like.
01:37And she's been great at, you know, bringing that to fruition.
01:41I thought it was really cool, you know, taking a different approach on activism
01:47and kind of bringing a more editorial, creative standpoint on it.
01:52Wielding peace also is such a fabulous, creative name for it.
01:56It's so cool.
01:57It makes me want to get involved.
01:58That inspires me to hear that.
02:00It's become so much bigger than what we could have imagined.
02:04With how creative, like, wielding peace is, what's the most surprising prop that someone had?
02:11We had a lot of people that wanted to do musical instruments.
02:14We need tar from March of Our Lives.
02:16We used a pen and a notebook.
02:18And if you think about it, it's kind of hard to portray, but we kind of bounced off each other.
02:23I love Peyton List.
02:25He's lipstick and it's the most random little prop.
02:28I love seeing, like, the creative ways that people have been utilizing what they're passionate about.
02:34I love that.
02:35And a picture says, like, a thousand words.
02:37What's been the most surprising thing that you guys have learned from wielding peace?
02:42Just seeing all of these people take to social media using hashtag wielding peace.
02:48Incorporate people from all over the world.
02:50Choosing objects of peace, taking their own photos, and more importantly, sharing their stories.
02:55And they're joining in our fight to end gun violence and to encourage people to turn to more creative, artistic,
03:02and peaceful art forms.
03:03There's strength in numbers.
03:05And so seeing that tremendous outpouring of support and love in such a short time has been really great.
03:12It's crazy when something like an idea is sprouted and then you see it literally happening in another country.
03:17Why is it so important for you to keep wielding peace growing on social media?
03:22The power of social media is insane.
03:25I mean, I'm semi-part of this generation and it still blows my mind what the younger people can do
03:32with it.
03:33Cameron, when he created wielding peace, it was intended to be a social media campaign.
03:38With that, we're taking it a step further.
03:40We're implementing a school mentorship program that we're working on.
03:43And we're also aligning with the legislative component so that we have both the creativity and the legislative.
03:50Because it's not just about encouraging people to choose peace.
03:53It's about advocating for stricter gun laws.
03:56Where do you think that wielding peace will go in the next five years?
04:01I want it to empower young people to feel more creative and kind of just like plug into that part
04:07of their life.
04:08And to add to that, we want the laws to have changed.
04:11We want to be able to look back and say we were a part of this incredible movement that Cameron
04:16started.
04:16And to know that kids don't have to buy bulletproof book backpacks.
04:20Society has just become so desensitized to it.
04:25And so now I think the ultimate goal is to eradicate the issue.
04:29I love that you guys are so passionate about the laws that need to be changed because it is way
04:34too easy to get a gun.
04:36We all know that.
04:37So I'm with you guys.
04:39I thank you guys for taking the time out of your day to let everyone know about how fabulous Cameron
04:45was.
04:45and what his legacy is still achieving.
04:49Anyone that needs any information or wants to go see these beautiful images, if you haven't already,
04:54definitely check out their Instagram at wieldingpeace.
04:58That was our Bay of the Day.
04:59Thank you guys so much for watching and we'll see you in the next one.
