KC chipped her tooth on a wine bottle at a party. See her smile go from a 7 to a 10 after getting a tooth bonding procedure from celebrity dentist, Bill Dorfman.
Transcript
00:00Typically bonding is a really easy procedure.
00:03We seldom ever use anesthesia.
00:06Yeah, you'll hear a little bit of
00:07and you may feel a little vibration,
00:10but it's usually pretty fast and pretty easy.
00:14My name is Casey Carnage
00:16and I'm getting teeth bonding done today.
00:20Well, basically what happened
00:21is why my tooth is chipped.
00:23I was at a party last summer
00:25and instead of wasting a cup,
00:27I usually just bring a wine bottle
00:29because that's what I'm gonna drink for the evening.
00:31I hit it too hard when I went to go lift it
00:33and maybe about an hour later,
00:36I rubbed my tongue against my tooth
00:37and realized it was chipped
00:39and then ran to the bathroom and was like,
00:40oh .
00:42I mean, it's my front teeth,
00:44so it's kind of the first thing that you see
00:47when I send in audition tapes
00:48or I do photo shoots that I find myself
00:52doing a little bit more editing
00:53or having to retake just to make sure
00:56that it's a little less noticeable.
00:59My name is Dr. Bill Dorfman.
01:01I am a cosmetic dentist in Century City, California.
01:06You know, it started off just as a cosmetic dentist,
01:10but it just kind of evolved in about 1990.
01:14We started a company called Discus Dental.
01:17We created Zoom and Bright Smile
01:19and Night White and Day White
01:21and BreatherX and all these products
01:22and that exploded.
01:24And at the same time, ABC had this amazing show
01:28called Extreme Makeover
01:29and it gave me a platform to actually show
01:33all the great things that dentistry does.
01:35Because before that,
01:36dentistry did not get a very, I would say,
01:40positive endorsement from the media.
01:44Like, Little Shop of Horrors and Marathon Man
01:47and all these things were not very good for dentistry.
01:50Hoping that, like, you know, the colors match.
01:52And who likes to do any kind of procedure?
01:54There's always that worry in the back of the mind.
01:56The nerves will probably rush in a little bit more
01:58once I'm in that chair
01:59and, like, you know, the lights and the doctor
02:01saying all these doctor terms I know nothing about.
02:04But, you know, that's, I'm a little, you know,
02:07just a little nervous about that.
02:08As far as bonding's concerned,
02:11you need to brush and floss your teeth like normal.
02:13The only restriction is you cannot bite
02:16really hard things right on the bonding.
02:19And if you're careful about that,
02:21it can last way longer than seven years.
02:24I'm not necessarily worried about the tooth shaving.
02:27I feel like the doctor knows what he's doing
02:29and I'm gonna hope for the best, and if not,
02:34then, you know, there's yelp.
02:40So we can do something called direct bonding.
02:43Basically what I'll do is apply a tooth-colored material
02:46to your tooth, and then once it's on there,
02:49it's like a paste, we hit it with a laser
02:51and it hardens instantly.
02:53Typically when we do any kind of cosmetic procedure,
02:56the first thing we do is take before photographs.
03:10In order to enhance the bond strength and bonding,
03:15we roughen the surface of the tooth.
03:20With bonding, we just take a little bit of a top layer
03:24of the tooth and kind of roughen it up.
03:27Once we do that, we'll etch it.
03:29There's a purple etching solution that we apply to the tooth.
03:33That purple etch is a 34% osporic acid.
03:42And what that does is that creates a kind of a lattice
03:46of a micro etching in the tooth.
03:49So you create these little micro porosities, actually,
03:53in the tooth.
03:54And those little pores bond to the resin.
03:58The resin that we apply is a clear resin,
04:01and that actually sinks into those little pores
04:05and creates the bond in what we call bonding.
04:08Once you have that resin on the tooth,
04:11you need to activate it with a light.
04:21This resin surface is now compatible
04:24with the composite material.
04:26Composite is a tooth-colored paste.
04:29Like tooth structure, it's not as hard as tooth structure,
04:33but it bonds to the resin that's
04:36in the microscopic pores of the tooth.
04:42In order to harden the composite paste,
04:45we hit it with a blue light.
04:50Once the composite material is solid,
04:53we go ahead and shape it and polish it
04:55to look as much like a natural tooth as possible.
05:03What I expected the treatment going into it to be like,
05:06I thought it was going to shave my tooth off
05:08and put me under, give me some Novocaine,
05:12but it didn't give me any of that.
05:14I was wide awake.
05:15So when I was working on Casey,
05:18I know she was really nervous,
05:20and she kind of like hit a lot of her emotion.
05:23But as soon as the cameras went away,
05:25she gave me a big hug and kiss and said,
05:27Dr. Bill, I love my smile.
05:29And that made it all worthwhile.
05:32Working with Dr. Bill Dorfman was very cool.
05:35Like he had a lot of personality.
05:36He was very comforting.
05:38He definitely had a lot of years in what he was doing.
05:41So he was very knowledgeable about what he was doing.
05:43So I didn't feel like, who's this man in my mouth?
05:48He definitely kept me at ease.
05:50He was very kind.
05:51He was very relatable.
05:53He didn't seem like, you know, he was judgy
05:54because my tooth was chipped or anything like that.
05:57And I think that's really important to be with a physician
05:59that you feel comfortable with.
06:01So I was very happy with him.
06:03I think my favorite part about doing what I do
06:06is just the ability to change people's lives.
06:09Like every day, that little bit of bonding
06:13we did and that little bit of reshaping
06:16took her smile from like a seven to a 10,
06:19like off the charts.
06:20And that's what she wanted.
06:22And that's what we gave her.
