00:00Did you ever cry?
00:01There were too many moments where I was like...
00:03Oh, good.
00:04There were people around.
00:05Ah, God.
00:05Was there any moment like that while you were filming where you were like,
00:07oh my God, I remember this?
00:09Definitely the arrival scene with the kite.
00:11I think just because it's such the iconic image of the hat and the bag and the coat and the
00:14umbrella
00:15and the whole thing coming out of the skies.
00:18And Rob played this incredible orchestral score while it blared it so I could hear it
00:23and be less afraid of being that high up.
00:26But that was the moment where I was like, oh my God, I'm Mary Poppins.
00:29I would love to know about what your memories of watching the old Mary Poppins were.
00:34The jolly holiday sequence.
00:36The colour and the beauty and the spectacle of it and the dance with the penguins.
00:40I remember just thinking, oh my God, they're dancing with a cartoon.
00:43You know, it was so amazing.
00:44And I also remember being really scared of the bank and the bankers.
00:47They freaked me out.
00:49Terrifying.
00:49Terrifying.
00:50Yeah.
00:50I'm terrified of birds.
00:52Are you?
00:52So the feed the birds scene was a bit troublesome for me.
00:57Why do you not like birds?
00:58I don't know.
00:58Just like the flight and the beaks and the web feet.
01:01I'm just not.
01:01And they're sort of quite furtive.
01:03Yes.
01:04And there's just so many.
01:05So that was quite terrifying.
01:06I get it.
01:07So you never go to Trafalgar Square.
01:09I avoid.
01:10London's quite hard for me.
01:11Yeah.
01:11Pidgeys everywhere.
01:13Feeding the ducks is like, never.
01:14No, man, I can't.
01:16Did you have any expectations coming in to do Mary Poppins Returns?
01:20Well, just hoping that we could protect that spirit on the original.
01:25Yeah.
01:25The kind of amazing imprint it's had on people's lives.
01:28I think that's the trick is to pay homage and yet we all had to have some guts to kind
01:33of carve out new space for ourselves.
01:35And like, I thought personally that the touches that you brought in from the previous film
01:39were so beautiful.
01:40And moving and not abused.
01:43No, not at all.
01:43We didn't want to abuse what you had.
01:45You want them to be just delicate enough for people to go, oh, and just want a little bit
01:49more maybe, you know.
01:50But there's more magic to be had.
01:52I think everyone felt that.
01:53And you brought the sass though.
01:55Yeah.
01:55You brought the sass.
01:56She is sassy.
01:57I think she's sassy.
01:58That was my favourite part of your embodiment of her.
02:00I really enjoyed how sassy in the little moments you had with yourself in the mirror.
02:03She's terribly vain.
02:05I mean, when I read the book, she's just so rude and so vain and weird and funny.
02:10And Rob Marshall, he's like, I want her to look very chic, you know.
02:14More than anything, Rob and I wanted to try and, you know, do something different with
02:17her and particularly find more private moments.
02:20When you see this enigmatic master plan, you see the little cracks of it and moments of
02:25tenderness, moments of humanity in the superhuman.
02:28But she's also the great seed planter, you know, she doesn't come in with a sort of
02:31finger-wagging lecture.
02:34It's just, she lets it be a voyage of self-discovery for the Banks and for Michael and for the
02:37kids.
02:38And I think that's what I love about her is that she makes it all about you so that
02:41you really do learn something.
02:43You're not told something.
02:44You learn something about yourself.
02:45And how did you feel about the singing?
02:47Obviously, you're not new to musicals.
02:49I mean, I love the singing now.
02:52I used to be very scared singing in front of people.
02:55But I think because my voice is very different as her.
02:58When it's not your natural singing voice, like you at karaoke.
03:02Yeah.
03:03Which is never our best look.
03:04But the dancing was quite daunting, you know.
03:07Really? Why?
03:07Just, I've never done it.
03:08I've never done anything like that.
03:09And I also am such a huge fan of those massive sort of show-stopping old Hollywood numbers.
03:15So, I didn't want to let Rob down, who's the best choreographer in the world.
03:19What would you say is the best piece of advice Mary Poppins has given you or us?
03:24Well, I think there's that line at the end between me and Angela Lansbury where she says,
03:30of course, the grown-ups will all forget by tomorrow.
03:32And I say they always do.
03:33And it's quite sad in a way, but it's an important one for us to remember.
03:38To hold on to childlike wonder.
03:39It's not a trivial thing.
03:41It's quite important, actually.
03:43I like that message.
