For Katie Alice Greer, rock music is a lifestyle of performative truth telling and catharsis. The singer and songwriter of Washington, D.C., punk band Priests unapologetically channels her personal and political convictions into aggressive, high energy performances.

00:02Ideas like what is power and what is beauty and what is intelligence can change, like they're
00:09very mutable, but it takes work. Maybe you don't totally understand every little thing about
00:16feminism, but like you hear about someone being disrespected or laughed at or ignored,
00:22and emotionally that's going to resonate with you somewhere.
00:33You want to know what it is, you want something you can write on down, you want something to move
00:44away for a reason to colonize, new hope is a great us-wise, new hope is a great us-wise,
00:56new hope is a great us-wise, new hope is a great us-wise.
01:00You want to know what you're saying?
01:10Starting Priests was more just fulfilling a dare with myself, scare myself a little bit, make music in front of
01:19people, something that feels unfinished.
01:32For a couple years when we first started Priests I was kind of in this mode where I was like
01:36I'm pretty much just gonna like read books and listen to music and consume art and movies that are like
01:43made by women as much as possible to just try to like retrain my brain's appreciation.
01:50Feminists or women in particular just might not speak up at all because it's like such a male language that's
01:56already created. I think about that a lot with the arts.
02:01People keep telling me to do other colors but I just really like the bright red. It just suits me
02:07right now.
02:09I've always had a really hard time understanding my own emotions. I don't understand why I feel things that I
02:16feel. So I think that's what got me into writing and art in the first place.
02:21I have like three or four different notebooks. No rhyme or reason as to why I have three or four
02:26different ones.
02:28I'm very preoccupied with ideas of social change and how it works and like I am not an activist. I'm
02:34not a politician.
02:36Now I think I'm an artist. I didn't always think that I was that either.

03:18I'm in a place in my life where I like myself a lot, I believe in myself, which hasn't always
03:25been the case at all.
03:27So if it seems like I'm going at it full force, totally, I totally am.
03:34I want people to see all of that.
03:37To me being an artist is like I want to show you as much of myself as possible.
03:41I'm just trying to figure shit out before I'm dead or like, you know, before I can't
03:48do this anymore.
