Denying healthcare access to women doesn't protect women's health.
Transcript
00:07This was the most important abortion rights case to be argued in the Supreme Court in almost 25 years.
00:13What this case is essentially about is a woman's right, protected for over 40 years by the Supreme Court,
00:19to make the important decision for herself about her health and family.
00:33People should realize that the greatest danger to abortion access in America was not fanatics with guns.
00:41It was actually state legislators.
00:44Legislatively, America is an anti-choice country today.
00:48More than half of the abortion clinics in America have closed in the last five years.
00:52About 27 states in America have some form of TRAP law.
00:58TRAP stands for Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers.
01:02One of the reasons that TRAP laws are so effective is because if you just read them, they sound reasonable.
01:10I am pro-life. I want both women and their pre-born children to be protected.
01:14Allowing substandard abortion clinics to continue operating without adhering to surgical procedures that hospitals are held to isn't helping women.
01:23It's making them more at risk.
01:25The American Medical Association, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists are on record as opposing these laws as not
01:34medically necessary.
01:35Abortion is legal, but there's no point in having it legal if you can't access it.
01:41And so this case is a really roundabout, sneaky way of taking away their rights.
01:47These are laws that zoom in on abortion providers and they regulate them in ways that they do not regulate
01:54other similar medical practices.
02:00These laws are important. If the Supreme Court in this case upholds these laws, it will be a victory for
02:08patient health and safety.
02:11Politicians will say that they're for women's health and safety. Nothing in the facts supports those claims.
02:18There is no justification for this state law. Even the American Medical Association and other leading medical providers have said
02:25that you cannot justify this on women's health and that the burdens are tremendous.
02:35If this bill were to go into full effect, 2.5 million Latinas in Texas of reproductive age would be
02:41negatively impacted.
02:42Only 10 clinics in the whole state of Texas will be open to serve all women of reproductive health.
02:49They've created a delay and to even make an appointment of up to 20 to 30 days in some Texas
02:54communities.
02:55They've pushed women later into the pregnancy and they've oftentimes caused women to have to turn to their own means
03:01to self-induce in some of the communities.
03:03So truly, if the state had women's health in mind, these kinds of things would not be the outcome.
03:09This case will literally determine the constitutionality of these laws. It could determine reproductive access for decades.
03:16There hasn't been a more important Supreme Court case before the court in more than 25 years.
