00:08Sprint car racing is not like tennis, you know, you miss your serve, you lose the game.
00:13Big deal.
00:14With sprint cars, you make a mistake, you wipe out coming out of a curve, you can die.
00:20It's like riding a freaking bull at 135 miles per hour.
00:26There are no faint hearts in this sport.
00:56There's this saying that Steve McQueen did in the movie Le Mans.
01:00He was asked, what do you do when you're not racing?
01:02You think about racing.
01:24You think about racing.
01:29You think about racing.
01:31You think about racing.
01:39I was born in a little town in Mississippi, Corinth, Mississippi.
01:43It's just a little town of 15,000 people.
01:45I was born with this really, really rare biological condition called intersex.
01:49You're born with both male and female biology.
01:51My parents and my doctors decided I was to be raised as a boy, but, you know, I always knew
01:57that I was female.
01:58You know, I never did feel like a boy, and I never did really look like a boy.
02:01By the time puberty came around, all the other boys were becoming boys.
02:05They were getting muscle tone and growing, and I just never did that.
02:09My dad, his name was Jim Hayes, and he was probably the coolest cat I ever knew.
02:15My dad was a hero to me, and he was a renowned race car driver.
02:20Everybody from Nashville to Birmingham to all over the Mid-South thought he was the greatest of all time, and
02:26I did too.
02:27I did too.
02:30Well, I started racing really, really early, around the age of seven.
02:33By the time I was two and three years old, my dad was riding me around in his race car,
02:37giving it the gas, and we were going fast.
02:39I never really did have any other chance other than to be a race car driver.
02:44My racing name was JT, just Terry, Terry with a Y.
02:48I would race on the weekends and live as a girl during the week.
02:53I had this double life, but nobody knew it.
02:59I had an extraordinary professional racing career, and it was going game busters.
03:03How do you walk away from that?
03:04Plus, my parents, I just didn't want to hurt them, you know?
03:07But ultimately, you have to deal with this.
03:11Three days before, I had my corrective surgery.
03:13I was running a dirt track race in Memphis, and nobody there knew where I was going but my dad
03:19and I.
03:20I won the race, and after the race was over with, I pulled up to our hauler, our race trailer,
03:25got out of my car, walked out behind the trailer, and threw up and wept on the ground.
03:31And I thought to myself, is this it?
03:35You know, 25 years of all this work I put into the sport.
03:39This looks like this is it.
03:50I had just got off the phone talking to one of my friends up in Virginia about the fact how
03:55much I miss racing and how much I miss sprint car racing.
03:58And then, bam, like three days later, I get this crazy email off of my website from a guy named
04:05Scott who?
04:06Gapin?
04:07Scott Gapin?
04:08Who's Scott Gapin, right?
04:10And he was putting a sprint car team together and wanted me to come up and drive for him.
04:15And I thought to myself, well, this is probably the craziest thing I'll ever do in my life, but I'm
04:21going to go do it.
04:30You either got to get that firm or that one soft.
04:33Yeah, let me get the feeling.
04:34We got plenty.
04:35We got a lot of time.
04:36Oh, we got no problem on time.
04:38I'm just saying.
04:38Let's get this right this time.
04:40Yeah.
04:40This is the last damn night.
04:42Let's do this.
04:43What have you been doing?
04:44Drinking.
04:45Oh, that's good.
04:46I went to the walk in the morning.
04:48You know that.
04:49I went to the autism walk for the station, you know, for the little buddy.
04:52I got something.
04:52It's on Facebook.
04:53You can say it.
04:55I carried a prinky back about the last half of it.
04:57Oh, really?
04:58When you get mad, you just, you just can't communicate.
05:02There's just some, everything just shuts down.
05:04And nobody can get through and you can't say nothing.
05:07And you might even be sitting there wishing you could be.
05:10You just can't.
05:10You just, it just don't work.
05:12It just don't work.
05:13Oh, we knew by the time he was a year old, we took him to the doctor because
05:18of all the rocking and everything he was doing.
05:20You know, there's something that's right.
05:22Well, the hardest thing was I just didn't know what to do to help him.
05:26If things would go wrong and he just couldn't handle it,
05:31he might grab his head and just start rocking.
05:34Or he might go out to the van and sit in the van and just start slamming himself back against
05:38the seat.
05:40I self-medicate.
05:41That helps massively.
05:43Once I started actually drinking before I smoked weed,
05:47first time I drank, I started talking to people.
05:49I was like, yeah, you're all right when you're drunk.
05:52I've just been self-medicating since I was about 13.
05:57Then him getting that foot cut off didn't help him a bit.
06:09I realized Scotty was a little different when I met him, and I didn't know why.
06:13But the more I was around him, I realized he dealt with autism.
06:17A month or so after being up here, he said, you know, I'm autistic.
06:21And I went, yeah, and you're really cool, and you're my friend.
06:27We just, we kind of grew into one another.
06:29And I really stood up for Scotty with people in the sport
06:33because they didn't know how to take him either.
06:35He's a nice person, and he's dealing with some stuff, too.
06:39So give him a break.
06:41She's like me. She grew up racing.
06:42She don't know anything other than racing.
06:44The day she was born, her dad was racing.
06:47Just like me.
06:47I've seen a picture of me, what, a year and a half old,
06:49I'm sitting in a race car.
06:51I don't remember anything other than racing him.
06:54No, I can't drive because of my foot.
06:57You steer with your left foot with the brake.
07:05Everybody wanted to have my dad.
07:06He was the coolest dad ever.
07:09Freaking arms like Popeye, drove a race car.
07:13Yeah, he was pretty cool.
07:15I used to be a sprint car driver.
07:17Well, we done pretty good.
07:18We won a lot of races, yeah.
07:24Think about what Scott's doing now, trying to have his own racing team.
07:28Well, I think he's spending a lot of money that he shouldn't be spending.
07:34They haven't done very well yet.
07:36Right, so, yeah.
07:38I don't think it's too far off.
07:40No, it's a lot better, and it drives better, and I'm learning how to drive it better, too.
07:45You know what I'm saying?
07:46You know, it's kind of one of those things that's just second nature to you.
07:49And once you do it, I mean, I've been out of the sea a little bit, and now that I'm
07:53doing it, it's starting to really come back into my head.
07:55My feet, my hands are all starting to work.
08:03When the engine roars on, it's your life.
08:07It's what you live for, and you know you're in the moment, and the faster you go, the better it
08:16feels.
08:19Sitting on the back porch crack a done, oh-oh, oh-oh Sitting on the back porch all night long
08:29Mommy's snapping green beans Baby's crying, oh-oh, oh-oh Billy's blownENT hop to my favorite song
08:39I got a lazy dog, she'd run in the sun all day
08:43She won't catch you, baby, she's friends with the squirrels
08:46All the rules gather round all y'all, cause they're all my way
08:50But if the bitch don't mind, better give her some of that bone
08:56If the bitch don't mind, better give her some
08:58If the bitch don't mind, better give her some of that bone
09:05If the bitch don't mind, better give her some
09:11Ladies and gentlemen, this is your three-and-five feature at Knoxville Raceway
09:18Sayin' on the back porch, cryin' your dog, oh, oh
09:23Sayin' on the back porch, all I know
09:28I'm a snackin' with me, baby, cryin' on, oh
10:00Sayin' the blowin' heart's my favorite song
10:23This is not workin' and I can't just keep doin' this, this is ridiculous
10:28Well, she's finished heat races, I'm talkin' about like an A-main
10:31All she got to do is get through 15 lap
10:33She went, what, about seven or something?
10:36She pulls in and says something's wrong with it
10:37I don't know, maybe there is, I don't know
10:40The engine in that car pulls the track fucking record
10:44Pulls the track fucking record
10:45Yeah, I like, I don't know what to do about it
10:48I don't know what to fucking do
10:58I wish you'd just come up here and quit drivin' a fucking springtime
11:02Just come up here and live here
11:06What's wrong with that?
11:10I'm getting 20 pounds off Mary
11:13You mean it?
11:16I don't know, maybe
11:19She has no butt
11:22I'm all about the bass
11:31Baby, I don't know what I do
11:37What I do now is I keep the beers down
11:39But I was just drinking way too much
11:43Well, here's the thing about racing
11:44Everybody thinks it's like in the movies
11:46You go out Ricky Bobby, you're gone, you win a race
11:47Well, it don't work that way
11:49So many people race, race, race
11:50They never win a race in their life
11:52If you don't get in the game and try it
11:54Then you lose
11:55I don't care how you look at it
11:57That's life
11:57I don't care what your age is
11:58Or what your gender is
12:00You know what?
12:01You can sit at home and get old
12:03Or you can be in life and live it
12:06And that's what I chose to do
12:07I'm trying to do something that's really hard to do
12:09You know
12:11And you got to have fun just racing
12:13Everybody can't be a winner
12:14It's like fishing
12:15You don't go catching, you go fishing
12:17Same thing with racing
12:18You go racing, you don't go winning
12:19So, you know
12:21And people that want to make it like a movie
12:24Rocky didn't win the first fight
12:26You know
12:27But he did say something really brilliant
12:28It ain't how many times you get knocked down
12:30It's how many times you get back up
12:32And that's what we're doing
12:33We're going to keep getting back up
12:34Keep showing up on Saturday night
12:36And we're going to have fun
12:51And I haven't regretted one moment of it
12:54You've had a blast
12:57I'll give her a girl in several moments
12:59Well, this is a film
13:11Why, my baby
13:15Why do you treat me so bad
13:19Why, my baby
13:23When I'm the best you've ever had
13:35Why, my baby
13:39Why was my tender heart betrayed
13:43Why, my baby
13:47Why do you treat me this way
13:51Oh, oh, oh
14:01Oh, oh
14:04Oh, oh
14:05Oh, oh, oh
14:07Oh, oh, oh, oh
