00:00The Civil War was the first time this country battled with the sin of slavery.
00:04During that time, mothers came together to try and heal the nation.
00:08These mothers believed that people who held opposing views
00:11people who held opposing views
00:13had to speak to one another.
00:14They had faith that these discussions would reunite their communities.
00:18Mother's Friendship Days, as they would come to be known, were created around the country.
00:23This is the seed that gave Mother's Day its life.
00:26There is no doubt that today we continue to be a divided nation.
00:29And so we believe that we must go back to the origins of Mother's Day for all people.
00:33For all people.
00:34For all people.
00:35In the spirit of mothering, not just as a noun, but as a verb.
00:38To mother is to care about the welfare of others.
00:42To mother requires empathy and thoughtfulness.
00:45The act of mothering creates,
00:46nurtures,
00:47affirms,
00:48and supports life.
00:49At its core,
00:50At its core,
00:52mothering is the willingness to have during discussions.
00:56This Mother's Day, we encourage friends,
00:58families,
00:58and strangers
00:59to come together
01:00and begin to talk about what scares us,
01:02what divides us,
01:03and how we as a country can heal.
01:05I need to have a daring discussion with somebody who has hurt me physically.
01:10With a family friend who supports Donald Trump Muslim ban policy.
01:15With someone who seems to think that my being an illegal alien faggot
01:18who looks Asian with a Latino name makes them uncomfortable.
01:21Who I need to have a daring discussion with is...
01:24I gotta have a whole lot of daring discussions.
01:32I'm having it right now.
01:33I need to have a daring discussion with white women.
01:39I want to have daring discussions with some white feminists
01:42who believe that I, because I'm a Muslim,
01:45cannot be a feminist.
01:46I need to have a daring discussion with my son.
01:48My mother.
01:48My mom.
01:49My daughter.
01:50If I'm being honest,
01:51I could do with more daring discussions
01:53with more of the people who matter to me than I've had.
