00:00Welcome to Unstyled. I'm your host, Christine Barbrick, co-founder and global editor-in-chief of Refinery29.
00:07Each week, I invite a notable person to come in and talk with us as we explore the funny, inspiring,
00:13sometimes heartbreaking tales of life, work, and love, as told through the things that we wear.
00:19And when I got to What Not to Wear, I noticed this unbelievable power that we were giving people.
00:25They went from feeling lousy about themselves for having gained 10 pounds and losing their sense of style while having
00:31three kids, to putting them in an outfit that just made them remember who they are.
00:36Now I know why fashion and psychology, they meet.
00:41Why aren't we dressing women that are above a size, you know, 14 and making them just as fashionable as
00:48the rest of the world?
00:49The moment I stopped competing, and the moment I stopped evaluating myself, comparing myself to the women around me in
00:56every aspect of my life, that's when I started to succeed.
01:00How many mood boards does it take for it to go from, like, inspiration to straight-up cultural appropriation?
01:06It's not a fashion statement. These are cultural things.
01:09It's a form of neocolonialism.
01:12Then I started to ask women after meetings or whatever was going on, have any of you ever objectified yourself?
01:21Total, unanimous, yes, we have.
01:24So whether women objectify women, or we objectify ourselves, or men objectify us, the self-esteem issue is huge.
01:32And we have to turn that around so that women are reaching potential and not feeling less than and not
01:41letting industries like the fashion industry and the beauty industry take advantage of our vulnerable state.
01:50UnStyled will launch in September, and you're going to love our guests.
