00:00That's how they hit human beings.
00:01If you hear those sluts right now, it's like...
00:05Holy f**k!
00:10Alright guys, here's my debut.
00:13I'll be honest, rugby is one of the last sports I thought I'd play.
00:21That's a rugby practice B2 does.
00:23I mean, look at me.
00:23I just barely break 5-1.
00:25I cry over pictures of cute kittens.
00:27Most of my athletic experience these days is rollerblading through Central Park.
00:32I definitely do not scream intimidating.
00:35I feel like I haven't jogged in like two years.
00:38And well, let's just say that rugby is not a game for the weak of heart.
00:42It's one of the roughest, toughest, most dangerous sports on earth.
00:46I'm talking concussions, broken noses, fractured ribs.
00:50But some of the strongest, most powerful women I've looked up to have played it too.
00:54And I really wanted to see how someone like me would hold up.
00:59So tonight I am out here in Red Hook.
01:03And I'm about to learn how to play rugby with the Brooklyn women's rugby team.
01:07Welcome to Brooklyn.
01:08Thank you. I'm nervous.
01:09But like what am I going to be in for today?
01:11Kyla is my new best friend and rugby angel.
01:15She basically was my guide throughout every single experience I had at that practice that day.
01:21We'll do some handling.
01:22Start with the basics.
01:24Stretching, a little bit of running, you know.
01:26Okay.
01:27Stretch your feet a little.
01:28All right, well I'm game.
01:31First step was this drill.
01:33We skipped to the side like so.
01:36Then we got down on our bellies.
01:38Then back up.
01:39And we did this a couple times to build up endurance and agility.
01:42Yeah!
01:43Not going to lie, I caught on to this one pretty quick and was feeling pretty good about myself.
01:48And if I get the ball, then you have to come with me.
01:51Pass it.
01:51Take it off and then try pass it to you.
01:52Once you get time to go to pass it.
01:54Okay.
01:55Then we moved on to running drills.
01:57I'm going to come back for the light.
02:01Sorry.
02:02This is where I started to get a little confused.
02:12Sorry, sorry.
02:13They are going to get right here on this side of you.
02:15So we have to separate ourselves.
02:18Sorry.
02:20You've got to be a bit more assertive.
02:22Go forward.
02:25Tackling.
02:25An integral part of the game.
02:27For a tackle to be complete, you must bring the ball carrier to the ground.
02:31Don't hurt yourself.
02:33The easiest thing to remember is cheek to cheek.
02:35So if I'm tackling you, I'm going to aim from my cheek to your ass cheek.
02:41Cute.
02:41So I move my hip and wrap.
02:43And then I pull my legs and put you on the ground.
02:46I had to figure out how in the world I had to actually take down a 50 pound bag.
02:52If you're going to hit someone, you're going to hit with your shoulder.
02:56This foot is outside of the target.
02:58Okay.
02:58This shoulder's here.
03:00I'm going to wrap, drive, push it down.
03:05Errol is the head coach of the team.
03:08Just drive straight through.
03:09And was a little bit scary, but I found out he has a heart of gold.
03:13Doing a great job.
03:15Yay!
03:18Nothing wrong with that.
03:19Truth talk, hitting the bag felt incredible.
03:22Have another go before we throw you in at the deep end.
03:26I hit, I hit!
03:28Nice.
03:29Well done.
03:29Nice.
03:30Alright.
03:31Go join the line.
03:32Finally, they taught me the terrifying parts of rugby.
03:36The actual touching each other parts.
03:39This is called scrumming.
03:41Oh my god.
03:42I'm going to do it.
03:43Players interlock with each other to restart gameplay.
03:46And sink down and push back up again.
03:48Oh my god, I can't do it.
03:50Don't be silly.
03:51It's kind of like in American football when players set up on the line.
03:56Scrumming is hard as fuck.
04:01Out.
04:01You're going to hit the bar.
04:02With you, with you.
04:04Then, they handed me the ball and had me run into the fray.
04:07Okay.
04:08Tap the ball.
04:09Tap the ball.
04:12Tap the ball.
04:13Tap the ball.
04:14Tap the ball.
04:17Tap the ball.
04:18Tap the ball.
04:18Tap the ball.
04:19Tap the ball.
04:19Tap the ball.
04:20Tap the ball.
04:20It was awesome.
04:21The definition of being thrown right in and just like joining the herd.
04:25Even though I had no idea what I was doing, everyone was so supportive and just like,
04:28you're doing a good job.
04:29I keep it up.
04:29So, someone said it best, like, fuck ups and mistakes are the best learning experiences.
04:33And I have definitely learned a lot.
04:36Here I am, already like sore, but they do this twice a week and have a match every weekend.
04:42So, I can stop complaining.
04:50One of the best ways to learn is to really just get out there and throw yourself into something.
04:54I don't care what it is.
04:56It is such an amazing growth experience.
04:58I'm so happy that I learned how to play rugby and I can't wait to have even more new experiences.
05:03Oh, fuck.
05:04Shit.
05:04I got to move to the inside.
05:05Oh, I don't know what I'm doing.
05:08Sorry.
05:08Sorry.
