00:00you need to put like a jackass thing before the movie like do not try this
00:09thank you so much for taking the time to talk to me i'm obsessed with the movie oh thank you
00:13when did you see it i saw it last week i was in a screening room alone so i'm very
00:17excited to go
00:18see it with oh yeah having a shared experience is kind of key with this movie so yeah go again
00:25with a bunch of girlfriends i'm so excited to see specifically the scene where jacob you lift
00:30margot up with one hand i just know that people on the internet if they're not already are going
00:35to be trying to recreate that so i'm curious if you guys have any tips i'm not going to reveal
00:39the
00:39movie magic secret to how he actually did that shot but uh yeah it was all jacob he did that
00:45you
00:45need to put like a jackass thing before the movie like do not try this really is that complicated
00:51yeah that takes that takes that takes incredible strength you just did so many incredible bicep
00:56strength you wouldn't you can't even begin just on the right arm too so much just this one just this
01:02enormous enormous arm all right i won't have my hinge date try to do that then i guess most of
01:07the
01:08tragedy in this movie could have been avoided if there was just more honest communication which
01:11just breaks my heart why do you guys think it's so hard for people to just say what they mean
01:15especially in like a romantic context god i know i'm real i guess i guess everyone's just scared of
01:22being hurt or getting hurt and putting themselves out there and being rejected and yeah i guess it's
01:27the fear of rejection maybe yeah or the you know if if you are rejected then you feel not lovable
01:34like you're not able to be loved and i think that's a really frightening sort of thing to face
01:38so if you don't put yourself out there you don't have to face that maybe you can't be loved you
01:43know
01:56i'll hold for spoilers but margot what do you think kathy's last words to heathcliff would have
02:01been if she could have said goodbye do you think there's like any reality where they could have just
02:05like been happy together knowing kathy it would have been like i hate you i hate you which always
02:11means i love you translation yeah direct translation is i love you i have not broken your heart you have
02:17broken it and in breaking it you've broken mine when is the moment when you think heathcliff and
02:24kathy like both realized like oh this is love for me i think it's the the moment he saw her
02:32it is one
02:33of those um sort of like galaxy exploding moments i think the moment he set eyes on her he loved
02:40it yeah
02:40there's that in the movie it's like the young kathy and heathcliff the first time they really see
02:45each other they're under the bed like as little kids and and he's got his hand over her mouth and
02:52they're both just kind of like terrified and i don't know i i think it's that moment i think that
02:58moment
02:58like that's when they're they're destined to to be each other's demise from that point on
03:05well thank you guys so much that's my time but i love this movie oh that was so quick
03:09i know i feel like we got real heavy even though i'm sorry i loved it emerald it's so nice
03:18to meet
03:19you so nice to meet you hannah there's so much i want to talk to you about so i'm just
03:22gonna dive
03:23right in i read that you said that you wanted withering heights to be this generation's titanic
03:27and i know titanic is pg-13 and this is rated r so i was curious if that was something
03:32that you were
03:32conscious of at all while you were making the movie god what a good question well i mean i think
03:37to be honest when it comes to ratings i always find it a little bit baffling because i don't think
03:42i think this is you know it's not it's it's very it's much more of a romance this movie than
03:48i think
03:49people are expecting um and so i mean i think that lots of teenagers will be able to watch this
03:58movie
03:58as long as you know an adult brings them and you know i think it's i think you just have
04:05to make
04:05the movie that you want to make that feels right to you and then you know not worry too much
04:10about
04:10things like ratings i love that answer um we'll hold this till after the movie comes out but i want
04:16to talk about the ending a little bit where does your version of heathcliff go from here god that's so
04:21interesting i mean i think it's it's always funny to imagine what people do when they're kind of yeah
04:31when you call cut i think the truth of it is is that the heathcliff of the movie and the
04:35heathcliff
04:35of the book you know may be the same which is that they're just emotionally destroyed
04:40and that emotional destruction bleeds out into other people's lives you know that's the thing is that
04:48there is no life after kathy and that's what he says in the book and that's the case here and
04:53so
04:53it's yeah whatever it is it will be it will be a kind of half-life i think why did
04:59you leave me
05:01why did you betray your own heart
05:05i love the aesthetic of this movie and of all your movies and i was really intrigued by the way
05:09that you
05:10used color so i was curious if there's a deeper meaning there or anything that you can talk about
05:14i mean absolutely i think the thing about the gothic and you know any gothic literature making
05:20any gothic you know cinema is that everything is pathetic fallacy right it's not just the weather
05:26that is stormy when people are feeling sad or sunny when people are happy it's that the clothes that
05:32they wear the rooms that they inhabit reflect their emotional landscape so so much of everything that
05:38we made in this movie was to do with that whether it's to do with the underside of things having
05:43hair on
05:44them for example so the underside of staircases the underside of tables often had fur or hair and
05:49it's kind of always about looking not just at color but at texture and kind of explaining as best
05:54as you can what a world feels like emotionally and so when it comes to the color palette of the
05:59clothes
05:59for example it made sense that kathy makes an imprint on the world that she's in kathy is kind of
06:04like
06:04burns an image onto any space and so we wanted to make sure that her clothes were very graphic so
06:10they're black white red and you know cation like a silver because she's always a kind of sort of
06:14indelible shape but when it comes to isabella she's sort of soft and pastel and she has trims which kind
06:20of give her this sort of sense of like disappearing into any room that she's in and so it's just
06:25always
06:25about looking at what is the emotional reason for making anything whether it's like the camera shot or
06:31you know the fabric on a chair i love that really quickly i'll get you out on this one um
06:37the scene
06:37where heathcliff picks kathy up with one hand is so good and i was curious if you could talk about
06:41the decision to wait to have them kiss oh i mean we had to you have to you have to
06:49wait you know
06:50there's no you can't in those days it was unbelievably transgressive and and it would have been a
06:57it's a threshold i think the thing that was really important to communicate was that at this time the
07:01kind of feelings that they had for each other you know out of wedlock and out of the class system
07:06were impossible and so it was really important that we understood how troubling the feelings are
07:12for kathy and how dangerous stepping over those boundaries was and i felt it was completely right
07:18that she wouldn't just she couldn't just yield so yeah so no no it was really important but no of
07:26course i mean it's very frustrating but that's the fun isn't it the weight it is thank you so much
07:34for
07:34taking the time to chat thank you i'm curious between the two of you who do you think well
07:39your characters who do you think is the most victimized by kathy and heathcliff's toxic
07:44relationship i mean what is it but isabella goes through is pretty tough oh you i know but the dog
07:55coloring of it all you know yeah i think we're both unlucky yeah we've not done very much but also
08:03you know i don't know i think they all they also have such a tough time as well everyone has
08:09a bit
08:09of a tough time in the end so true um also and i was curious before heathcliff even enters the
08:17picture
08:18i was like it seems almost like isabella is maybe like in love with kathy a little bit like how
08:23would you
08:24define that sort of like obsession that she seemingly has yeah i'm sure she yeah i think a
08:30part of her is but i think it's more like at that sort of period love in a marriage was
08:35like a bonus
08:35and so like female relationships were just as sort of important and i think when kathy joins like i
08:41think isabella's like she's sort of mine too you know she's she's probably very lonely actually and
08:47she she is desperate for a best friend or a companion because she probably would have had
08:53like a nanny who would have left a couple of years ago and so she's you know she's just making
08:57her
08:57sort of dresses and dolls and when you wave in the snow it's the it's the best friend so i
09:05think
09:06she is just obsessed with kathy kathy because she has so much love to give and kathy's like the most
09:11beautiful just sort of intoxicating person to be with so i think she probably is but then she really
09:18probably understands like what that is when she meets heathcliff i think alison i'm curious if
09:23there's anything heathcliff could have said to isabella that night when he comes in through the
09:27window it would have made her go like you know what actually i'm good i don't think so
09:35i i don't think so i think once he arrives in the house she's like okay because also she is
09:42someone
09:43who's never been told no like she always always gets what she wants like she is quite um spoiled
09:50and so i think getting heathcliff is kind of sort of a quest like i think she really was gonna
09:56i think
09:56she felt like she was probably gonna get him one way or another or something you know and um so
10:02no i don't
10:02i don't know poor thing i know and she's out i'm curious at the end where do you think your
10:08character goes from there yeah especially with the cliff just sitting in the house like yes i well i
10:17was saying this earlier that i think he probably needs to find isabella again because she's gone
10:22off somewhere and they just need to just reassess or and process what's happened yeah but definitely
10:29get straight back in the house maybe you go on a little holiday somewhere yeah take a break you
10:34know i can follow you like a dog to the end of the world
