SpaceX is reportedly seeking access to at least 80,000 U.S. cell sites. Why could that benefit tower companies like Crown Castle (CCI), while potentially threatening wireless carriers such as AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile?

The difference comes down to two business models: renting tower infrastructure versus operating a wireless network. On Oct. 23, Crown Castle closed up 9.1% while AT&T fell 8.0%, T-Mobile 7.7% and Verizon 1.2% (close to close).

80,000 is a reported nationwide goal, not 80,000 Crown Castle leases — Crown Castle has about 40,000 towers in total. Reported discussions do not mean a signed Crown Castle–SpaceX lease.
