00:18the four cars are still parked in the morning spaces the directors emerge from the building
00:24squinting in the midday sun elvis i can't believe it's lunchtime already
00:30i've been in meetings since eight namida you say that every day then act surprised when your stomach
00:36starts complaining elvis laughing it's not complaining it's making a reasonable request
00:44jaja good because lunch is ready and i'm not carrying it upstairs for people who are too busy
00:50to eat lena i smelled it from the hallway what did you make jaja motoki luambo
00:59rice beans fish and enough salad for the people who claim they're trying to be healthy
01:06namida that sounds like you're looking directly at me jaja i'm looking at everyone you're all
01:12getting salad elvis let's leave the cars here and take the elevator we'll get there faster together
01:20lena and you can tell us what happened in that meeting you came out looking like someone had
01:26moved your lunch break elvis they nearly did i had to remind them that a meeting can end before the
01:34food gets cold namida jaja let me take that it looks heavy jaja you can take it when the elevator
01:43stops
01:44i know what happens when people try to help while it's moving lena is that from experience jaja more
01:52than once someone bumps my elbow the lid slides and suddenly the whole floor knows what we're having
01:59elvis at least then nobody would ask what's for lunch namita elvis you're always looking for the
02:07practical solution elvis it's a gift lena it's also why your stories have no surprises
02:15they laugh as the elevator passes the classroom floor namida i saw the students coming out of class
02:21earlier they looked exhausted elvis they've been working hard maybe we should save them a little
02:29dessert jaja a little means one piece each i'm counting lena i'll help you count jaja you're the
02:39first person today who has offered useful help the elevator reaches the dining floor namada takes the
02:46dish from jaja and they step out together the table is full of food and conversation jackets are draped
02:54over chair backs sleeves are rolled up and everyone settles in elvis jaja this looks wonderful you've
03:02been cooking all morning jaja since five motoki doesn't care what time your meetings start namada
03:10you made breakfast too when did you get a chance to rest jaja i rested while the motoki was cooking
03:18lena lena that doesn't sound like resting jaja it is if nobody asks you questions elvis then we'll try
03:28to be quiet while we eat jaja don't make promises you can't keep everyone laughs namada passes the rice
03:37to lena namada how was your morning lena busy but good i was helping the new team settle in
03:45they seemed nervous at first elvis they'll be fine it takes a little while to learn everyone's names
03:53and which chair jaja says is hers jaja it is my chair namada you say that about every chair near
04:01the
04:01food jaja because every chair near the food is important lena back home i usually ate lunch at my
04:09desk this is much nicer people actually have time to talk elvis we don't always manage it but we should
04:19work gets busy people still need a moment to sit down together namada and to hear how everyone's doing
04:26not just what they've finished jaja offering the fish then tell us but take some food first
04:34nobody tells a good story on an empty stomach lena deal i'll take a piece of fish and then i
04:42want to
04:42hear how you learn to cook motoki so perfectly jaja that story takes longer than lunch elvis good thing
04:50we're not rushing back just yet conversation resumes around the table as everyone serves one another jaja
04:58sets a steaming dish of luambo on the table the four of them pull their chairs closer leaving their
05:03phones and work behind for a moment jaja sit down all of you lunch tastes better when nobody's trying to
05:12eat it while walking elvis i was only checking one message jaja and i was only serving lunch now we're
05:21both
05:21done elvis puts his phone away namada smiles and helps pass the plates namada you've been looking
05:29after everyone since early this morning who's looking after you jaja right now whoever passes me the rice
05:39lena that's me and i'm taking your advice i'm sitting down properly jaja good this is the best part of
05:48the day
05:49everyone in one place eating the same food elvis we spend so much time talking about plans and targets
05:57it's nice to just ask how people are doing namada then let's do that lena how are you settling in
06:05lena
06:06better than i expected the first few days i worried i'd always feel like a visitor but people keep making
06:14room for me at meetings at lunch even in conversations i don't understand yet jaja you're not a visitor if
06:21you know where the good food is lena then i'm definitely becoming part of the family elvis not family
06:30by blood maybe but we've shown up for each other enough times namada that counts for a lot jaja it
06:38does
06:39now eat before the luambo gets cold we can be sentimental after lunch elvis shares lunch with the
06:46visiting u.s and german partners a small model of the k7x sits on a shelf but the conversation soon
06:53turns
06:54away from vehicles u.s partner you all seem to work closely together do you ever carpool elvis sometimes
07:04but the bigger thing is that people here are trying to build something they can take part in
07:08not just watch from the sidelines german partner and the building brings so much of that work together
07:15why build upward instead of spreading everything across one site elvis space is limited and people
07:22lose time traveling between places here students technicians small businesses and the office teams
07:30can be close to one another they can meet without planning a whole trip us partner does that closeness
07:38actually change how people work elvis i think so a student can see what happens in the workshop
07:48a technician can talk to someone starting a business people begin to imagine a next step for
07:54themselves because they can see it nearby german partner so the building is not only efficient
08:01it makes the different parts of the work visible to one another elvis exactly but a building can't
08:08create that feeling on its own people do that they teach share what they know and make time to listen
08:16u.s partner you sound more interested in the people than the equipment elvis the equipment matters
08:25but it only matters because of what people can do with it i remember what it was like to be
08:30starting out and not know whether anyone would take me seriously i don't want young people here to feel
08:36that their future is decided before they've had a chance german partner that is something we can support
08:42not just with funding but by sharing experience and building relationships elvis that would mean a great deal
08:51we're not looking for partners who only visit take photographs and leave we want people who are
08:57willing to work alongside us us partner then let's start with that working alongside you elvis good
09:06but first please eat jaja will ask whether i let you leave hungry nomada sits with the head teacher over
09:14lunch a whiteboard behind her is covered with figures but she turns away from it to listen head
09:20teacher you've filled that board with numbers do you still remember what they're meant to represent
09:27namada i do but say it anyway head teacher the students the girls who need a safe place to learn
09:36the young people who want work but don't know where to begin
09:40namada when i was your student you taught me to write my name on a piece of concrete because i
09:45didn't
09:45have a notebook i still remember that head teacher you were determined to learn namada you made sure i
09:54had the chance now i look at the numbers because they help us see whether we're reaching people
09:59but i don't want the numbers to hide them head teacher a hundred students is a useful number
10:06but it doesn't tell me who's afraid to speak in class or who walked a long way to get there
10:11namada no that's why i need you to keep telling me those things head teacher and the girls namada we
10:20need to make sure they feel safe supported and welcome not just count how many enrolled
10:26if a student stops coming i want us to ask why before we celebrate the next target
10:32head teacher that sounds like the teacher i remember namada i'm still learning from you
10:38head teacher you're the ceo now namada that doesn't make me finished learning the head teacher glances at
10:46the board head teacher then keep the numbers just keep the stories beside them namada i will and when
10:56you come back next time tell me what we missed head teacher i will but only if you promise to
11:03eat lunch
11:04before it gets cold namada jaja has already given me that instruction head teacher then for once

12:02helpline or health worker for support lena eats lunch at her desk glancing from her salad to a blueprint on
12:09the table across the room a screen shows a greener kampala quiet streets electric bikes and rooftops full of gardens
12:18lena to herself it looks so simple on a screen she studies the blueprint then looks back at the city
12:27lena the hard part is getting from here to there one person at a time i suppose her phone buzzes
12:34with
12:35a message from nomada come eat with us when you're done lena smiles closes the blueprint and picks up her
12:41lunch lena i don't have to figure it out alone students arrive with backpacks and bike helmets talking
12:49excitedly as they head toward the elevator student one we saw the cars downstairs are those yours elvis they
12:58are but don't worry about the cars how was class student two good we're starving though namada then you're in
13:10the right place dining floor is just one floor down student one do you eat lunch with the students
13:18namada we try to it's a good way to hear what's going on elvis and a good way to find
13:24out who's been
13:25skipping lunch student two nobody's skipping today namada good come on then save us a seat
13:35student the lesson pauses for lunch students put away their notebooks and stretch their legs
13:42namada stops by a shelf stocked with learning materials and support kits student do we have to
13:49be back right away namada take a proper break you'll learn more if you've had something to eat elvis and
13:57if
13:57anyone has questions about the bikes we can talk after lunch student i want to know how the battery
14:03works elvis good question the workshop team can show you they're just upstairs namada that's one of the
14:14nice things about having the classrooms and workshop close together you can see how what you learn gets
14:20used jaja but first food even the best questions are difficult on an empty stomach
14:28student laughing yes jaja workers take a lunch break beside a row of e-bikes
14:35moses wipes his hands and joins elvis namada jaja and lena moses you've all come to inspect the work
14:43elvis no inspection elvis no inspection we came to see how you're doing moses in that case i'm doing
14:52better now that lunch has arrived jaja i brought enough for everyone even the people who pretend
14:59they're too busy to eat lena how's the new batch coming along moses slowly but well we've learned a lot
15:08from the first bikes if we get the parts and time we need we can build more elvis what's the
15:15biggest
15:16thing slowing you down moses sometimes it's not the work it's waiting for a part or trying to solve a
15:23problem without the right tools namada let's write that down and work out what we can do you shouldn't
15:30have to keep raising the same issue moses thanks and i'd like some of the students to come see the
15:37workshop elvis let's arrange it they'll learn more by seeing the work than by hearing us talk about it
15:45jaja now sit down and eat you can build the future after lunch the group steps into the roof garden
15:53a few workers tend the plants beneath the solar panels the city stretches out beyond the railing
16:00jaja i still can't get used to having a garden this high up namada you said the same thing the
16:06first
16:06time we brought you here jaja and i was right both times lena you've got a lovely view from here
16:13jaja
16:16the view is nice the vegetables are more useful elvis the solar panels help with the building's power
16:24and the garden gives us fresh food it's a good combination namada we're still learning what grows
16:31best up here jaja ask me i know a thing or two about growing food lena i'll take you up
16:39on that i'm
16:40better at planning gardens than keeping plants alive jaja then you can help me water them we'll see if
16:47planning is enough lena laughs and reaches for the watering can elvis this is probably the best meeting
16:56we've had all day namada because nobody brought a presentation elvis exactly the group gathers around
17:05the table with the last of lunch the whiteboard lists projects and goals but nobody is standing
17:11over it jaja pours t elvis we've talked a lot about what we want to build i'd like us to
17:18talk about what we
17:19want this place to feel like namada welcoming somewhere people can ask for help without feeling
17:26small moses and somewhere the workshop team is included when decisions are made about the workshop
17:34lena somewhere partners listen before they arrive with answers jaja and somewhere people eat lunch
17:41before it gets cold elvis that may be the most important one namada we won't get everything right
17:48but we can keep talking to each other and fix things as we go lena i like that not a
17:55perfect plan
17:56just people willing to keep showing up moses and to do the work jaja and to eat they laugh and
18:05raise
18:06their cups elvis to the work ahead and to doing it together
18:11so
