Provisions of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act have been invoked against Ebbin Paul following an arson attack on a synagogue in Kerala. Investigators revealed that the accused was caught on CCTV setting fire to the site and had previously been involved in other arson incidents, including attacks on a nursery and a used car showroom. Analysis of his mobile phone recovered chats showing he acted on instructions from an unidentified handler via Telegram and sent back videos of the attacks. The National Investigation Agency and the Intelligence Bureau are investigating potential wider terror networks and cross-state links after synthetic drugs were also seized from his residence.

00:01UAPA has been invoked against Ebin Paul, who was caught on CCTV attacking a synagogue in Kerala.
00:08The state of Kerala was shocked with this case that had come about about this young man,
00:12who clearly threw what looked like an infimile substance, and that led to clearly an attack at the synagogue.
00:19Ebin Paul has been invoked in two more arson cases.
00:24A nursery arson probe uncovered more fire attacks.
00:27Now we are told that he has had certain past criminal background as well,
00:31and he allegedly targeted the house twice.
00:36The Intelligence Bureau, the NIA, have collected details in the arson case.
00:41Synthetic drugs allegedly seized from the accused residents.
00:45Joining me now, my colleague Shibimol KG for the latest on that.
00:49Shibimol, now this is one state that took a lot of pride when it came to diversity, inclusivity, all of
00:54that and more.
00:55In this case, what happened? Any reason of why he would attack a synagogue?
01:00And I believe we haven't heard of a case like this before.
01:04Well, you know, that is what the police is focusing mainly on as part of investigation as to what was
01:11the motive behind this.
01:12Because they have, you know, concrete evidence to prove that he is the one behind it.
01:16Because there is a proper CCTV visual showing how he comes there and, you know, how he slowly sets the
01:22place on fire.
01:23And he also, they also recovered charge from his phone with someone who was ordering him to do all of
01:29this.
01:30So, the focus right now is on finding who is the person giving these orders.
01:34Because it's not the first time. There were a few incidents before also like this.
01:37The police never thought there was an angle like this to those incidents.
01:42Only after this incident, after this accused and Edwin was snapped, the police understood that there was a similar model
01:48to Brandi that was operating behind this.
01:50And on questioning, they understood that he was behind those same cases also.
01:54So, he's been following somebody's orders. The chat, the financial records recovered also shows that.
02:00So, who's this person giving the orders? What is the network behind it is what the police is currently focusing.
02:07And that's why the, you know, relevant UAP charges are now being over.
02:10Keep tracking, Shibimol, on this case because I also would like to understand in the days to come, was this
02:15a lone fox case or is there a huge nexus?
02:18There's a reason, ladies and gentlemen, that the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act has been invoked in this case.
02:23It's primarily an anti-terror law, national security law, so why this one?
02:27There's a reason and a timeline for that and I want to take you through that and shocking has come
02:31from a state like Kerala.
02:33UAPA has been put against accused Edwin Paul.
02:36This is very significant because intelligence agencies have had inputs about sort of an escalation in terror recruits from the
02:45state of Kerala.
02:45But this one for now appears different.
02:48Two more arson cases have been registered against Edwin Paul.
02:51There have been previous cases as well of arson attacks that have been now that have come to surface against
02:56him.
02:57But why is this so significant?
02:58What we are looking at is the behaviour that Edwin Paul showed.
03:01The accused has been linked to the arson incident.
03:03There was a previous nursery case that was also being investigated where his name had cropped up.
03:08Used car showroom arson that was investigated in which his name has come.
03:14So multiple attacks in which his name had come form.
03:17But this one caught the attention of the police officials.
03:21Arson videos were sent to unknown handlers.
03:24So he did what he did at the synagogue and in the previous cases.
03:28And he was sharing those videos with what appears to be a handler via telegram.
03:33Telegram is an encrypted application.
03:35So for security reasons he was possibly using that.
03:38And that is why the NI, the intelligence bureau and the police want to investigate if there are terror links
03:43that are also under probe.
03:45They are going to look at all angles here in this case.
03:48And that raises a wider question.
03:50Why would Edwin Paul target a synagogue?
03:53What was the reason?
03:55The SIT has said Amit searched for Lawrence Bishnoyi as well.
03:59So that's possibly the internet history.
04:01Again, that is being linked to, did he want to join a certain gang or a certain terror network?
04:06And was he doing this to get publicity and fame for that?
04:10SIT probe is expanding to Pune as well.
04:13Other cities of course will include.
04:14And in cases like this, usually the lead may take the police officials to other states as well.
04:20The NI, the National Investigation Agency that takes care of the terror aspects here.
04:25The intelligence bureau, collecting details on this case as well.
04:29Remember this cannot be only considered as a simple case.
04:32According to the investigators, synthetic drugs were also seized from his house.
04:35So was this really just about him?
04:38Angry, agitated or any other reason?
04:40Or was he clearly tasked to do this and why?
04:44Thankfully he's been nabbed in time.
04:46Was he planning other attacks as well?
04:48Oh, no.
04:48I'm sure it's fine.
04:48I'll talk to you.
04:48I love the police now.
04:48And I love it.
