In September 2005, a virtual pandemic accidentally broke out in the video game World of Warcraft. Developers introduced a new dungeon featuring a boss named Hakkar the Soulflayer. Hakkar used a spell called Corrupted Blood, which dealt high damage over time to high level players. The spell was supposed to stay inside the dungeon area and expire after a few seconds.

However, a programming oversight allowed players' virtual pets to catch the infection and keep it after leaving the dungeon. When players summoned their pets in highly populated capital cities, the disease spread rapidly to thousands of low level characters. Infected characters died within seconds, leaving virtual skeletons littering the city streets.

Players responded in fascinating ways that mirrored real life. Some high level players acted as volunteer healers, while others intentionally spread the virus to public areas. Scientists and epidemiologists later studied the event to better understand how human behavior affects real world disease outbreaks.
