In 2022, an eighty two year old grandmother named Jean from Long Island, New York, received a terrifying phone call. The caller claimed to be her lawyer, stating her grandson was in jail and needed eight thousand dollars for bail money. Jean immediately recognized the situation as a well known wire fraud operation known as the grandparent scam.

Instead of panicking or hanging up, Jean decided to outsmart the criminals. She played along on the phone, convincing the scammer that she had the cash ready at her home. When the fraudster sent an undercover courier to collect the money bag, Jean had already alerted the local police department.

When the runner arrived at her doorstep, officers were waiting inside her house to arrest him. The recorded phone call and swift police response resulted in the capture of a major local scam ring leader. Authorities later praised her brave actions for raising public awareness about targeted phone fraud against senior citizens.
