In December 1990, French and British workers met deep beneath the English Channel. They had successfully built the Channel Tunnel, connecting the United Kingdom and France underwater for the very first time. However, this incredible engineering feat left a massive problem. The gigantic tunnel boring machines had nowhere to go once the excavation was finished.
On the British side, engineers decided that retrieving their massive machine was far too expensive and difficult. The machine was longer than a football field and weighed over one thousand tons. Instead of pulling it back out, they devised a dramatic and unusual solution.
They swung the giant drill bit downward and drove the entire machine into the chalk bedrock beneath the main tunnel floor. After driving it into its own underground grave, workers filled the gap with concrete.
To this day, that massive steel machine remains permanently buried deep beneath the seabed. It stands as a hidden monument to one of the greatest engineering wonders of the modern world.
