The Gotthard Base Tunnel in Switzerland is the longest and deepest railway tunnel in the world. Stretching over fifty seven kilometers through the solid rock of the Swiss Alps, this mega project took seventeen years of relentless engineering to complete. Workers and massive tunnel boring machines had to cut through treacherous terrain where rock temperatures reached up to forty six degrees Celsius.

Engineers faced extreme underground pressures and freezing subterranean water springs while excavating more than twenty eight million tons of rock. Tragically, nine workers lost their lives during the massive construction effort. The breakthrough finally happened in two thousand ten, and commercial service began in two thousand sixteen.

Today, high speed trains cut through the mountain in just seventeen minutes, revolutionizing European travel and freight transport. This monumental achievement stands as a triumph of modern civil engineering against nature itself. Tell us in the comments if you would ride through this deep mountain tunnel.
