00:00Crystal Lake is part, it's an extension of the Friday the 13th franchise.
00:04Do you remember your first experience with Friday the 13th?
00:07And did it make, or are you a horror fan?
00:10Well, yeah, I'm the youngest of four brothers,
00:13and they always would scare me with stories about Jason,
00:16and then going around the house at night when I was sleeping to scare me.
00:21So that was my introduction to Jason.
00:23And then, you know, growing up, I went to a lot of summer camps,
00:25and Jason, the legends of Jason are always around summer camps,
00:29I feel like, no matter where you are.
00:31And conversely, I did not go to summer camps because my mom saw Friday the 13th
00:36and was like, that's not happening for my child.
00:39So I'm a scared, I'm the scared of cat in the group.
00:43I grew up watching the films, going to the movie theaters every Friday night.
00:48So I was kind of surprised when this script came to me,
00:51and I'm like, wow, you're really going to star in Friday the 13th?
00:55So what a world of wind.
00:59A world of wind.
01:01A world of wind of being in this franchise.
01:04The horror of the series is obviously Linda Cardellini
01:06and her amazing performance as Pamela Voorhees.
01:09What would it like to have her as number one on the call sheet on this project?
01:12A gift.
01:13Yeah.
01:14The gift that keeps on giving.
01:16She's such a master at her craft, and so it's exciting.
01:20She sets the best energy, too.
01:23She really is probably one of the most down-to-earth people I've ever gotten to work with.
01:27And she has this switch where she can just turn it on.
01:31And most people don't know that Linda was coming from another show.
01:34Yeah.
01:34So she had just wrapped the show that she went in for.
01:37Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:38So, yeah.
01:40Gotta give it.
01:40Gotta give it.
01:41Yeah.
01:41So she was coming from another show and still, like, brought it every single day.
01:44You know, just a seasoned actor and a pleasure to work with.
01:47Unlike the other townsfolk, Levon isn't as enchanted by Crystal Lake.
01:51Does he see his role as police chief as a fresh start or a reluctant new beginning?
01:56Ooh, I think it's both.
01:57I think it's a fresh start and a reluctant new beginning.
02:00The fresh start means it's a new place, a new town.
02:02A reluctant new beginning is more so, you know, I have so many things that has happened in Newark that
02:09I'm really not sharing.
02:11You know what I mean?
02:11So how much is it new if you haven't let go of the old?
02:14Dorff is technically a legacy character by name, but he really develops in a meaningful way over the course of
02:19the eight episodes.
02:20What was the biggest challenge you faced in bringing him to the screen?
02:23Well, Brad, our creator, and I had a lot of conversations because on the page, Dorff could be very, very,
02:29very big.
02:31And he's part of the comic relief of the show, which I think in the franchise has always been very
02:35important to embrace comedy and sort of have that balance.
02:39But it was about finding Dorff's vulnerability a little bit, finding out, you know, he wants to be respected.
02:45He's like, you know, the small kid who grew up in this town and like everybody knows him as like
02:49this little kid.
02:50And now he wants to be a man and a police officer and a good police officer.
02:54And he wants to learn from Levon.
02:57So threading all of those things into the character really helped like expand it a lot.
03:01Brie is the first character to interact with Elias, Pam's husband, played by the great Hamish Linklater.
03:06Was his casting in the series kept as a surprise to look at what was from the audience?
03:10And what was it like filming that scene at the pier?
03:13Well, we don't grant interviews very often, Miss Brooks, and we rarely go on the record.
03:19I am here.
03:21Take advantage of this opportunity.
03:24It was a surprise.
03:26I don't think I found out until like a week before.
03:31So for me, I was like, oh, this is exciting.
03:33I'm about to delve into someone who knows like or delve into a story with someone who knows the craft.
03:39That man is brilliant.
03:41He's a wonderful actor.
03:43And you never know what he's about to do.
03:45But everything that he does is from a place of truth and curiosity.
03:51And he's just got this spry energy about him.
03:54There was this one moment in one take eating the popcorn.
03:59And he literally goes interviewing or answering my question.
04:03He goes, like offers me the popcorn.
04:07And I looked at him and I was like, I don't, I don't, I'm not taking this.
04:12This is like, this is terrifying.
04:14You're a terrifying man.
04:14And then cut.
04:15And I was like, that's brilliant.
04:16He's an electric actor to work with.
04:18He's an electric actor.
04:19Yeah.
04:19Levon has that stand-up with Elias in the police station, which Dorf interrupts and helps even the odds.
04:25How long did that sequence take to film?
04:27And what was it like to see Hamish in that full menacing kind of mode?
04:30With all due respect, Chief Brooks, you've got four guns, five guns versus your one.
04:37No matter what happens, you don't fare well.
04:40It took us two days.
04:41Two days.
04:42Yeah, it took us two days to film that scene.
04:44There were 38 setups.
04:45Yeah.
04:45For that scene.
04:48And Hamish, he's offbeat, you know, so he's never, he's not playing to a rhythm that's expected.
04:54You know what I mean?
04:55And so I think it was one part where he, the way he grabs Pam's face.
05:02Mm-hmm.
05:02And it really upset me, you know, because I'm like, you know, you're now, and I'm putting the story together.
05:10Oh, this, oh, oh, you know.
05:13So all that stuff is happening in between that time, but you love it when you feel those real emotions
05:18in the moment.
05:19Yeah.
05:19But yeah, it took two days.
05:21That was a wild time.
05:22I mean, you know, 38 takes, two days, and that tension that's in the scene was there in every take.
05:28Because you have Linda and you have Hamish.
05:30Both are incredible, like, will change the temperature of a room just by walking into it.
05:35So to have those two, you know, we were just along for the ride, I feel like, for most of
05:40that.
05:40It's really cool to watch y'all do that, too.
05:42Yeah, I don't know about long for the ride, because I was pretty much killing it.
05:44Okay, yeah, yeah.
05:45You had your moments, you had your moments.
05:48No one's going to take those moments away from you.
05:50No, but you know, I would say the way Q, our director, set it up, you know, the way she
05:54blocked it, you know, he was able to, you know, walk in, and then Dorf comes in, jumps over the
05:59table, throws his ninja star, has his hero moment.
06:03It's a Japanese throwing star, one of five key tools in the deadly art of ninjitsu.
06:07You know, it's just, you know, it's a true Western standoff, so, yeah, it was, it was amazing.
06:13Yeah.
06:13One of the best Easter eggs is when Jason reveals himself to Elias and Pam, and he's wearing the burlap
06:19bag from Friday the 13th, part two.
06:21Do you guys have a favorite nod to the original series, franchise in the series?
06:27That's one of my favorites, is the bag head, and I feel like a lot of people will be very
06:33happy to get any sort of different iterations of Jason besides Kid Jason.
06:38I think it's just really dope that we're in Blairstown.
06:41We're in the original location, you know.
06:43I don't think you can really do this series much justice if you're not starting where it began, you know,
06:49and I think that excited all of us.
06:51It fed y'all, too, they were in the woods.
06:53Set the tone.
06:54I did not have to be in the woods, but they were in the woods, and it really sets the
06:58tone for the series.
06:58I think something else that was nice was the young love between the campers, you know, seeing that and the
07:04football analogies, you know, those things.
07:07Those were all really great scenes.
07:11And a part of the franchise, too.
07:12The franchise always had that sex, kill, sex, kill, sex, kill, sex, kill, you know.
07:17Kill sex.
07:18At the end of the season, Leavon is Woonid Bree is reveling from the Bellflower Revelation, and Dwarf is in
07:25pursuit of Elias and Pam.
07:27And what are your hopes for your characters if there is another season?
07:30Where do you want to see them go next?
07:32I want to, yeah, keep exploring the relationship between Leavon and Dwarf, and now that Brianna, like, we've met finally
07:41by the end.
07:42So I think, I don't know, is Bri going to be in Crystal Lake?
07:46Is she going to come?
07:47Listen, Devin, I'm a scaredy cat, but I also really, really like blood.
07:52It's a Scorpio thing, which is my rising and a massage.
07:55Anyway, I want to see Brianna interact a little bit more with blood.
08:03Get you to find a body.
08:06Yeah, I think I just want to see her sink her teeth more into things, and I know Brad has
08:10many ideas.
08:11Oh, Brad's got, yeah.
08:12Yeah.
08:12I think I just want to figure out how to solve this case at this point.
08:15Yeah.
08:16I'm probably going to be healed up by that point in time.
08:17And then I'm still in this town, you know, because the FBI has came and tried to take this case
08:24for me.
08:25You know, so I want to really get back in there and see what is going on and who's doing
08:30this.
08:30Is this mystical?
08:31Is this real?
08:32You know, am I chasing a tail here?
08:34Yeah.
08:34Those type of things.
08:35Yeah, I'm excited to see how we all meet Jason.
08:38We'll see you next time.
