Steiny and Guru continue to react to Yaxel Lendeborg vs. Luka Doncic, the Warriors' Kristaps Porzingis situation, how the team looked in Game 1 of 82, and more.
Transcript
00:00Lendeborg. All right.
00:01Yaxam.
00:04You know, he's taking some heat.
00:06Yeah, you know what? He got too emotional.
00:09Luka got in his head.
00:10Okay.
00:11Might have gone a little overboard.
00:14But I always try to look at it from more than one position.
00:18And I'm going to use somebody that we're all kind of familiar with.
00:24And he happens to be the general manager of the Warriors.
00:27So when Mike Dunleavy came in as a rookie, as the third pick, he was pretty passive.
00:33He wasn't really an aggressive type player.
00:37And that was always the wrap on him his entire career.
00:41So what I'm going to assume at this point is, first of all, I would rather have a player in
00:46his first game do something like that.
00:49That you know that if he's mature, he'll be able to tone down and harness in a positive way.
00:56As opposed to perhaps a player that might lack a touch of the inner fire, if you know what I
01:03mean.
01:04Well said.
01:04So I can work with Yaxam Lendeborg from that angle.
01:08Yeah.
01:09I prefer working with him from that angle rather than the other angle.
01:15Let's put it that way.
01:15I've always said that, Stony.
01:17It's easier to coach a young kid or a young lady that shoots too much than doesn't have the gall
01:26to shoot.
01:26But I do want to ask you about Coach Curran and all this.
01:29Because the one thing about Yaxam I didn't like, and it's just me, I thought he could have held on
01:34or told his teammates I lost all respect for Luka.
01:37Like, you just got to the league.
01:39Nobody cares, but I'm rooting for you, young man.
01:42But that part, to me, let me know that Luka had gotten his head.
01:46When he got called the P-word, he wasn't in the game.
01:49And immediately, Coach Curran put him back in the game.
01:53I love that.
01:54Sure.
01:55Yeah, like, okay, now you're being disrespectful.
01:57Go get him, young fella.
01:58But it's one game, you know.
02:01And Yaxam did point that out in his post-game presser.
02:04Talked about it was a team game.
02:06But I'm looking at D'Anthony Melton, 21 minutes.
02:10Al Hortford, 17.
02:12If I could add the guru calculator, 38 minutes, no points combined.
02:17You know, we're undersized at the wing position.
02:20Is this just the Lakers and Kessler?
02:23Or is this something that's going to follow us until Bassey and hopefully Pods play?
02:27But even if they play moving, how did we just run out of gas last night?
02:32Well, first of all, the one thing that, to me, became apparent last night is,
02:37and whether you think they're dumb for this or not,
02:40they expected Kristaps Porzingis to play games for them this year.
02:45I mean, I know they didn't expect him to play 80.
02:48They might not have even expected him to play 60.
02:51But if you read Nick Friedle's piece,
02:54the fact that they found out a day or two ago
02:58that Porzingis is probably never going to play for the Warriors again,
03:04that impacted them.
03:05And it also, I was saying this yesterday,
03:08it impacts him from a practical standpoint of even if he doesn't play that much,
03:12even if he can only play 40 games at 20 minutes a night,
03:15that's still 1,000 minutes over the course of a season.
03:18And say what you will about Porzingis, but he's 7'4",
03:22and he can defend the rim.
03:23But now they don't even have that option.
03:26And it's why I've always believed with Porzingis
03:29that you can never, ever, ever expect something from him.
03:35You have to simply be ecstatic when he gives you something
03:41because we're beyond the point of being able to count on him,
03:45if you will, Gu.
03:46Yeah, and I know we were talking during the break with Carter,
03:52and we talked about Kessler's size,
03:54but man, you can't tell me him being 12 of 12
03:58was a byproduct of Draymond at the 5.
04:02And I'm not even, you know, blaming Dray.
04:04Stiney, we are small, man.
04:06Well, we're really small.
04:07I mean, you would be a hell of a lot less small
04:10if Porzingis could have played 24 minutes.
04:13And again, you can scoff all you want out there, and I get it.
04:16But if Porzingis can play 24 minutes last night, then you're not small.
04:20Then you got 7'4", 6'9", Lendeborg,
04:24and then Draymond, who at times can play bigger than his size.
04:28But it's all for naught at this point.
04:31If you're saying the Warriors look small, they are small now.
04:33They're very small.
04:35And so they're going to have to figure that out.
04:38And not that I want to get into this right off the bat,
04:40but there's already talk about them, you know,
04:43looking to try to see if they can get Miles Turner.
04:47So I think they're very well aware of how small they are
04:53and how a guy like Walker Kessler, you know, really hurt them last night.
04:58And, yeah, I get it.
05:01He had a great game.
05:02But, you know, it just shows you you can have a great game by doing two things,
05:08running and dunking.
05:09Right, right.
05:09And he has good hands.
05:12That's the part.
05:13Kessler's got really good hands.
05:15And he doesn't fumble that crap up near the rim.
05:19He knows where he's going.
05:20Warriors paid the price on that one.
05:22This is what Gu and people are talking about,
05:26about Yaxl Lendeborg and what he had to say about Luka.
05:30Being in there firsthand, just watching all the whining and complaining,
05:33I lost all respect, man.
05:35Like, that was awful.
05:36Like, me getting frustrated.
05:37It's not about, like, the foul being called.
05:40It's about, like, him complaining the entire game.
05:43And then you get the foul call.
05:44Congratulations, bro.
05:44And then you talk to me like you did something great, bro.
05:47Come on, Tom.
05:47That's sweet.
05:48All right.
05:49And that's where he's probably going to wish eventually got that back.
05:53Does it matter?
05:54No.
05:54But I would have liked, like, he's not going to be able to do that after every game.
05:58Right.
05:58And talk about the other team and the other guy and this,
06:01because there's a lot of that that goes on, Luka.
06:03Don't let him know you're even tripping on him, you know?
06:05And I know they got into it, but that's my whole thing.
06:08And he said he shocked me, too.
06:09He didn't watch a lot of NBA Yaxo when he was in college, if that's accurate.
06:13But I heard him say that.
06:14And I'm just thinking to myself, don't even feed into that.
06:18But everybody ran with it and signed ESPN.
06:21And Stephen A.
06:21Smith, you know, guys like that are commending Yaxo because they're tired of Luka's, you know, act.
06:27But that's what Luka is.
06:28But the bottom line is the team lost, and they are once down 35 points.
06:33And I hope tomorrow against Memphis, you know, we see a different Golden State Warrior team.
06:39But I tell you what, partner, I read the news and the possibilities of possible Miles Turner,
06:44and he would feel like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar if we were able to get our hands on him.
06:48Not just not for him and what he'll do, just the fact that he's a body and can play.
06:53And I'm just thinking about yesterday in totality, just the way that that news broke.
06:58And I thought it was trolling at his finest with Porzingis.
07:01And you're right.
07:02It had to throw a monkey wrench into this team.
07:07But I can't say that's why they were down 35.
07:10And, yeah, you look at the turnovers to me, 15.
07:14But, Stine, it felt like 21 because they came in a bunch.
07:17How many came in the third quarter?
07:19That I don't know.
07:20The third quarter is what I'd like to find.
07:22We got our score 36-16, so I got to imagine a few.
07:27From the 415, Dunleavy in the front office do not get a pass for the KP debacle.
07:33I didn't get into whether they deserve a pass or not for Kristaps Porzingis.
07:40I'm just telling you that he's not going to play this year, and they needed him to play.
07:45You can make any judgment you want on how terrible that move is.
07:48The reality is that they're fair game holding against Dunleavy and Lakob for being small right now
07:58and expecting Porzingis could give him absolutely anything.
08:02I mean, yeah, as for the post-game comments, not crazy about him.
08:06But also, you know, it's his first game in the NBA.
08:11Right.
08:11So he'll –
08:12I got you.
08:14I didn't mind.
08:16All we need is a little subtle turning down right now with the axel, and he'll be fine.
08:21Now, Steph Curry, again, first quarter, I'm like, this whole Warriors stuff, just me, Stine.
08:26I feel it.
08:28I'm watching Michael Jackson backslide, moonwalk.
08:31I like it.
08:31He's hitting his threes.
08:33But 21 minutes on the night, this one got away from him.
08:36Draymond Green, 21 minutes on the night.
08:38But those 21 minutes, I want to just ask you, I was a bit disappointed because he wasn't letting them
08:43fly,
08:43and I thought he had some shots.
08:46All one from deep.
08:47Like, I didn't feel Dre yesterday.
08:49No, and I thought that was kind of interesting, too, is Draymond didn't play poorly in the first half,
08:55but he had six assists, and I think he had one three, and I was like, oh, that's interesting.
09:01You know, he has six assists and one three, and I don't think he had –
09:05he might only had one turnover at that point.
09:07Then third quarter comes, and then he starts turning the ball over, and he's not shooting threes.
09:13You have him at the coaches' review.
09:14You got to lose that.
09:15Yeah, and I'll tell you what, I'm more worried about Draymond Green
09:18than Yaksha Lendeborg.
09:19It's going to be a tough season for Draymond Green.
09:21Wow.
09:22He was that frustrated in game one against that team.
09:25I mean, I think Draymond Green is – he's got to have to do a little bit of a reset
09:30because he can't play an entire season.
09:33That's it.
09:33I didn't think about that.
09:34Either at that level or that, you know, animated about where the team is.
09:42And one of the fouls, he pulled the guy down by the jersey, and that was the one.
09:47I just feel bad for the guy.
09:49I don't know what his title is, Donnie.
09:50They're supposed to look at the review to say challenge it, but they got love for Dray.
09:55I get it, but I'm like, man, he's running hot.
09:57But, boy, I'll tell you what.
10:00When they were down 35, I was thinking about Porzingis.
10:03I was thinking about the day.
10:04I was thinking about my 43 and 39.
10:07It's just one game.
10:09But, man, oh, man, Stonnie, they got their work cut out for him.
10:14And I don't know what to make of DeAnthony Melton.
10:16It's one game.
10:17But, man, remember I was telling you, he's just smooth with it,
10:21and he only took two shots.
10:22But, you know, I'll tell you who was shooting, Brandon Williams.
10:26You know, I like being a shooter, Stonnie.
10:28He always stood up 12, only made three.
10:30But, man, moving forward, man,
10:32how are we undersized night in, night out going to overcome that?
10:36Well, it's a good question.
10:38Good question.
10:38And it's probably something, or apparently is something,
10:41that the Warriors are already trying to figure out.
10:44Let's go to Austin in San Jose to get us started.
10:46Our man.
10:48Hey, fellas, how you guys doing?
10:50Hey, hey.
10:50Listen, I want to try to be balanced here.
10:53Two things.
10:54One, I think you can say that we all want Yackle to be good, right?
10:57So, that being said, now I'm going to say kind of what Stonnie said,
11:03but I'm going to say a little more harsher.
11:04I thought a lot of his comments, I thought his actions pretty much
11:07were kind of dumb, honestly.
11:09I don't think you go to your first game, regardless of whether Luka does.
11:15Luka's been doing what Luka does for years.
11:16Luka's a superstar, though.
11:18So, you're not.
11:20You should be playing.
11:22More play and less talk.
11:24You need to be playing the game.
11:27You know, he should call up Angel Reese and ask her how to do it.
11:30You know, you talk, you play, but you also win.
11:33So, don't talk when you're down.
11:35You know, when your team's getting beat, don't be talking.
11:39But that's not just on Yackle.
11:40So, I'm just going to say that about Yackle.
11:41He's young.
11:42Let's hope he learns.
11:44I don't want to see him talk after every game, though.
11:46That's a great point.
11:47That's actually a great point.
11:49I want to see him play, guys.
11:50But let me move on to the team.
11:52Because I don't want it to be about criticizing Yackle.
11:55Let's just say one game, let's move on.
11:56But, but, the team, here's my words, lethargic, old, no rhythm, no rhythm.
12:05I saw two games.
12:07You tell me if I'm wrong.
12:08First quarter, Draymond and Steph, one game.
12:11Everybody else, a different game.
12:13I saw no connection at all the whole game.
12:17Second half.
12:18I saw guys running up and down the court doing their own thing.
12:22Everybody's going one-on-one.
12:23Gee's trying to go one-on-one.
12:24Now, Melton, I have no idea.
12:26Melton's still trying to get paid, guys.
12:28I hate to be, I hate to be harsh.
12:30He saw Yackle was wide open a couple, at one time, looked off and went to the rim and didn't
12:35get anything.
12:36I mean, we've got too many agendas.
12:38Remember a couple years ago when Draymond talked about agendas?
12:41Yep.
12:42I see that building again, only with the young guys.
12:45Why?
12:46Because Pods got paid.
12:48A lot of the other guys were trying to get paid.
12:51The team isn't very good.
12:52Let's be honest, man.
12:54What we saw last night, if this is what we're going to see all year, dude, it's going to be
12:58bad.
12:58This team, I watched a lot of games, early games already, guys.
13:04And if we're being honest, Guru, I know you're trying to make these guys on the team sound better than
13:10they are.
13:10I feel that every day.
13:12I feel like I hear you saying, you want to believe these guys on the team are better than they
13:17are.
13:18Compare them to the guys in the league.
13:20Forget about the Warriors.
13:21How do they stack up against the guys they've got to play against, Guru?
13:25I mean, you want to keep telling me that you believe that Pod's coming back and these guys coming back
13:31are going to make it moody coming back.
13:33Do you really believe these guys can stack up with the best teams in the league?
13:37I mean, I just want to be real here, man.
13:39I'm not asking for an answer.
13:40Let's just try to be honest with each other.
13:42I just want to say, last night, let's hope it was just the first game.
13:47But, man, if that's what we're going to see all year, good Lord, man.
13:50I'm going to keep watching, but I'm going to keep being a fan.
13:53But, okay, guys, that's all I got.
13:55Thanks.
13:55Thanks, Austin.
13:56Appreciate the call.
13:57Oh, man, that hurt me, Stony.
13:58And I'll say it hurt me because my prediction, Austin, was 43-39, and that was assuming Porzingis was going
14:04to play.
14:05Then we had a conversation about Porzingis when we found out the news he wasn't an option at all.
14:10I damn near went to 39-43.
14:13What I'm saying to you, I'm not saying – and I love Austin.
14:16I just feel like he thinks I'm knocking on Warrior fans' door telling you George Niang is better than he
14:22is.
14:22I'm not.
14:23The reality is I'm going off what the team is telling and what they're doing.
14:27And I'm not saying if Pods would have played last night, they would have won 127-105.
14:32But what I feel in my heart, as much as he gets hated on, that would have been a start
14:37to maybe to connect guys more than what it looked last night.
14:41So, again, I'm not telling you Pods is Nash.
14:43What I'm telling you, Austin, is what is a fan to do?
14:48Just don't watch the games or hope that when Jimmy gets back, Stiney or Moody gets back, and some of
14:54these guys take a step forward, that's what I'm hoping for.
14:58Listen, I don't care if you hate Pods.
15:02I don't care if you love Pods.
15:04Talk to him.
15:05He would not have made a discernible difference in that game last night.
15:10However, if there's anybody that watched that game last night and thinks that Brandon Podjemski shouldn't be getting minutes on
15:19this team, they absolutely don't know what they're talking about.
15:23I mean, on this team, on that team last night, you tell me why you think Pods doesn't deserve a
15:32lot of playing time on the team that they fielded last night.
15:35That's all I'm saying.
15:36And I appreciate that, and, again, I'm not no Pods stan.
15:40I'm a realist, and I get credit where credit is due.
15:43And on this night, last night, De'Anthony Melton in for Pods, 21 minutes, no points, 0-2, two rebounds,
15:51two assists.
15:52Don't tell me Pods wouldn't have had more.
15:54Now, do you win the game?
15:56No.
15:57And, Austin, I'm not telling you, and Austin's out there, that I got the Warriors going to the Western Conference
16:03Finals.
16:04Everything that comes out of my mouth is predicated on hope and improvement.
16:08And I started the show telling you we're already got a rat on the table brought to you by Echo
16:13Pest Control.
16:13Stoney, we're undersized again.
16:16Yeah.
16:178-8-8, 9-5-7, 9-5-7-0.
16:21Lakers handled the Warriors last night, 1-27, 1-0-5.
16:25A laugher.
16:27You know, Warriors hung in for a half, but even at the half, they were down 14.
16:30Curry was very good in the first half.
16:32I'll tell you what, that was, you know, one of my, again, you have to balance good game, bad game,
16:41singular game versus, you know, are these going to be continuing trends?
16:46The one thing about last night's game regarding Curry and Draymond that, you know, I got to make a note
16:53of is they were good in the first half and they were bad in the second half.
16:59And they are older players.
17:01So, you know, I mean, we all saw that point in the game last night where it got into the
17:08third quarter.
17:09They were getting down.
17:10And guess what?
17:12That's when Curry missed his a bunch of threes.
17:15Why?
17:15Well, because he had to try to make something happen.
17:19And that's what's going to be a difficult task for him to manage this year.
17:25But look, they've got a lot of age on this team.
17:29And so that's the one thing, you know, I almost would have rather Curry got off to a slow start
17:35and then had a big second half.
17:36But again, it's just one game.
17:38For all we know, we could have seen 90% of that game could have been an outlier last night.
17:44I don't think it was, but that's my point.
17:48Just tell me what you think of this.
17:50And you could say, Gu, I didn't give it a damn thought.
17:52But you know how I'll watch these games and I always think I saw something in Wiggins' eyes.
17:57But I do share it, and I know sometimes I'm wrong.
18:00But Steph Curry re-up, so for the foreseeable future, he's going nowhere.
18:04And we all love that in Dub Nation.
18:06He's going to retire a warrior.
18:07But there were times in that game I feel like I just wanted to read his mind while he was
18:13on the bench watching what's around him.
18:16The game already get out of hand.
18:18It's getting worse.
18:19The Lakers are clowning.
18:21And, Stiney, he's just gazing.
18:22And I've seen this look before in seasons past.
18:24We've seen it for a long time.
18:26So tell me it's nothing.
18:27Well, how many times have we seen him do that when they have a tough loss?
18:30I'm not going to make a big deal out of that.
18:31But you know what I'm talking to look like.
18:33I mean, how many times in the last three years have they panned to Steph Curry on the bench, and
18:40he has that exact same look?
18:41What is Steph thinking?
18:43He's got to be hot.
18:44They can't help him.
18:45He knows it's over.
18:46Okay, well, if he really – I mean –
18:49I got you.
18:50I got you.
18:51I don't think it's the time for this.
18:52But if you really think that, oh, my God, Steph's miserable, and he's like, what –
18:57Okay, well, then he shouldn't have signed a two-year contract with the Warriors.
19:01You know what I mean?
19:02I mean, like, I don't want to be harsh about, like, look, you made your bed.
19:06This is it now.
19:07But he's a grown man who knew what he was doing, and now he's got to be Steph Curry
19:15and try to work to make this team better.
19:18Let's go to Dave in Fresno.
19:21Hey, Dave.
19:23Hey, guys.
19:24Yeah, I'm kind of with the last caller with the frustration of the Warriors' coverage.
19:31I feel like, you know, people that cover the Warriors in the media, whatever,
19:35they tiptoe around what the issue is with this team.
19:38And we can all see what the issue is with this team.
19:41Bringing back Dre.
19:42We knew that was a problem years ago.
19:45You know, re-signing pods.
19:46I know we're going to pay for pods because he tries hard, and he's always available.
19:50He's a Rudy story.
19:51Yeah, that's all cute and everything.
19:53You know, we're going to try to pay for Dunleavy where he messed up the whole football situation
19:59with Poole and Nick Amiga situation.
20:02We're going to tiptoe around being small out there, being small for years.
20:07Like, all this tiptoeing and not saying we're the real is why fans are frustrated.
20:13You just watch the game.
20:15You can be a fan of the team and still be frustrated.
20:18We ain't got to be fairytale and make stuff up.
20:21You know, it's a bad team, whether Paz play or Jimmy play.
20:25It don't matter.
20:27Even if Pozingas play, they're not a good team.
20:30It's a bad run team at the moment.
20:33I know we had our good years.
20:35You know, can't complain about that.
20:37Don't want to sound ungrateful.
20:38But currently, no.
20:40Like, there's nothing good about this team that says number 30.
20:43Let's keep it 100% booked.
20:46So we can came for Paz.
20:47We can came for Jimmy Butler.
20:49We can came for Steve Kerr.
20:50We can came for Stanley.
20:51We can make stuff up to make it sound good because you're a fan.
20:55But that's not the real.
20:57That is not the real.
20:58And that's the frustration.
21:00Like, that's – it is frustration.
21:02Watching that game, I know it's only game one.
21:04But that's what this team is.
21:06You can make up stuff if you want.
21:08But real fans and real people that understand what's going on ain't going to fall for that guru.
21:13But let me ask you this.
21:15And I want to hear your answer.
21:16Because I sure didn't tell you, and I know my partner didn't.
21:19I'm asking you, where are you hearing the Warriors are contenders or the Warriors are a threat?
21:25You ain't hearing it here.
21:26And I'm listening to my other comrades on the station.
21:29Where are you hearing that at?
21:31Because it damn sure is not on TV because nobody's picking the Warriors to win.
21:35Real quick, they beat Houston, went seven, and Curry got hurt against Minnesota.
21:40Jimmy goes down last year, and it's been all bad.
21:43But just real quick, if you can, where are you hearing people telling you or selling you this team is
21:49better than it is?
21:52It's not about being championship contenders.
21:55It's like I said.
21:56It's like people – when Draymond should not be on the team.
21:59And we're like, well, he just needs a limited role.
22:01Or he just needs to do this.
22:03No, he just needs to go off the team like pods.
22:05Oh, yeah, he deserves 110 mils.
22:06He plays every game.
22:07He runs through a wall.
22:09He takes screens and picks and all this other stuff.
22:12Like, he doesn't affect the game either.
22:13Like, all this stuff that they try to fail you is what I'm saying.
22:17And I know they're not a championship team.
22:19That's not the frustration.
22:21You know what I'm saying?
22:22The frustration is all this extra stuff that we not speak on what the real issue is
22:26and why they're not a championship team.
22:28But that's the problem.
22:29Hey, Dave, thanks for the call.
22:30Appreciate you, buddy.
22:31He's down.
22:32Yeah, I mean, look, I got – they didn't play well last night.
22:38And I guess what happens when you lose a game like last night is that, yes,
22:43you start to think about all the stuff that happened prior.
22:46You know, why is Draymond Green still on this team?
22:49You know.
22:50Well, we know why.
22:51Why?
22:52They love him.
22:53Okay, well, then –
22:56He's got two contracts and they love him.
22:58Okay, so Draymond Green is on the team because the Warriors love him.
23:01Yeah, but we –
23:02I've never agreed with it.
23:03You don't agree with it.
23:04But where do we go with that?
23:05I don't understand.
23:06Well, we can't go anywhere with it.
23:08We go because we sit on our ass and watch the team play,
23:11but he's part of the team.
23:13I'm just saying don't come to us with that decision.
23:16I'm not telling you Draymond coming back or re-upping twice
23:20to the last two contracts was the right thing.
23:22So don't put that – I'm just – to the fans at my doorstep.
23:26I was not on board with that move.
