George and Yame’s story is a moving look back at two rescued lion brothers who arrived at the sanctuary malnourished, compromised, and in need of care. Kevin Richardson reflects on how far they have come over more than a decade, from fragile cubs in poor condition to confident, character-filled lions with very different personalities.
The video follows their enrichment walk through the bush, where the pair love to roam, mark territory, splash through mud, and test the boundaries around the dam and enclosure. George’s distinctive gait and physical challenges are contrasted with Yame’s powerful, athletic build and calm confidence, while both brothers show the playful, stubborn bond that has defined their lives at the sanctuary. It is part wildlife documentary, part animal rescue story, and part intimate sanctuary walk with one of the world’s best-known lion keepers.
Their journey also highlights the sanctuary’s shift away from rescue captivity and toward protecting lions in the wild, habitat conservation, and responsible wildlife awareness. The result is an emotional, character-driven lion story that blends animal behavior, conservation, and long-term care.
Perfect for viewers searching for lion rescue stories, wildlife documentary content, sanctuary walks, animal behavior, big cat conservation, and Kevin Richardson lion videos. It also suits anyone looking for nature storytelling, rescued animals, and emotional wildlife content with a strong focus on lions in the wild and ethical conservation.

00:00:00Love love love their walks. Look at these two. Come on boy. What are you doing? I'm in a lion's
00:00:12sandwich here. Come.
00:00:17Are you crazy?
00:00:25I remember these two like it was yesterday. The day we went to collect them at the airport.
00:00:36There were these two terrified young lions. No more than I think they were about four or five months old
00:00:47at the time.
00:00:48Yeah sure they've come a long way since then.
00:00:51Go!
00:00:52Hey hey my boy! Come.
00:01:03Alright guys. So welcome to another very special live premiere.
00:01:11And today we're going to be featuring two very very special boys.
00:01:20George and Yame. They need no introduction.
00:01:26And guys so yeah we're going to be enjoying an hour of these two wonderful cats and all the special
00:01:33moments.
00:01:35It's so funny because just the other day I was looking at some footage of when these two arrived.
00:01:42And it just it seems like really it seems like it was yesterday but in fact it's over 11 years
00:01:47ago.
00:01:47And I was going through this footage and I was just seeing how young everyone was including myself as Yame
00:01:58tries to creep through my legs.
00:02:00And you know it made me realize actually how far these two lions have come.
00:02:07Especially George.
00:02:09He was super super compromised when he was a cub.
00:02:13And yeah his brother Yame over here fed slightly better.
00:02:20I think Yame's problem was more psychological than physical and physiological.
00:02:25But poor old George suffered the consequences of really really really poor diet.
00:02:33And neglect.
00:02:34And neglect.
00:02:35And so yeah it's just so incredible to see how far they've come in this period of time.
00:02:42And how quickly the time has flown by.
00:02:44So yeah enjoy today's video.
00:02:47Guys yeah so many of you have been asking in recent videos how can you help.
00:02:52You love the work.
00:02:54You love what I do.
00:02:55And you want to help.
00:02:56And I think one of the biggest ways you can contribute to helping not only the lions here at the
00:03:01sanctuary.
00:03:02But also the work that I do in general is by joining members or memberships.
00:03:08YouTube, memberships, Pride Leaders and then on Facebook.
00:03:12It's called Facebook Subscribers.
00:03:16That contribution really does make a massive difference in enabling me to continue to make these kind of videos.
00:03:24And also to just you know contribute to the work that I do.
00:03:28And yeah just to end off guys these two lions played such a pivotal role in my career.
00:03:36Because they actually made me realize that rescuing lions from all around the world is not the answer.
00:03:45And it was really a turning point.
00:03:48Before that I was kind of dappling with the idea or toying with the idea is the better use of
00:03:55words.
00:03:56As to whether we should keep the sanctuary going as a rescue facility.
00:04:00And when I received Georgia and Yamae it really just confirmed that I was heading in the right direction.
00:04:08By saying no.
00:04:10Let's stop rescuing lions and perpetuating captivity.
00:04:16And let's start to focus on animals in the wild, lions in the wild.
00:04:22And let's head down that route.
00:04:24Let's get the foundation up and running.
00:04:25And let's start focusing on acquiring habitat, protecting habitat.
00:04:31Or just doing what we can to support organizations that do the same thing.
00:04:39They protect and preserve habitat.
00:04:41So yeah that's where we're heading.
00:04:45And all that's left for me to say is from Yamae and George who's wandered off.
00:04:52Is enjoy the live premiere.
00:04:55Ask as many questions as you want.
00:04:58I will be trying my best typing away.
00:05:01Trying to answer your questions.
00:05:04I'll do my best and I hope you enjoy.
00:05:08Cheers.
00:05:08One reopens.yon
00:05:12-a.. Hello
00:05:12boy. Ha
00:05:14ha ha ha No.
00:05:17No guys
00:05:18Look at
00:05:20that. Look at
00:05:22that. Oh wow
00:05:32wow wow wow wow wow. almost no
00:05:35Лю-a..
00:05:47All right good morning everyone today I'm going to be taking George and Yame out for an enrichment
00:05:54walk and these two lions absolutely love love love love their walks look at these two
00:06:08I mean you cannot tell me that these two are not having an absolute blast
00:06:16it's insane
00:06:20so we're going to be taking the two of them out for an enrichment walk if we can get going
00:06:26and
00:06:27we'll also be talking a little bit about their characters hey boy come let's go
00:06:36you're a nutter George George the nutter today is very cool we've been having
00:06:45this promise of rain and so there's a nice little a nice little breeze in the air
00:06:52hello big boy and they are full of beans and happy happy cats
00:07:00oh Georgie keeping up with them is a bit of an issue
00:07:07sometimes with all the gear doesn't make my life easy but hey it's not about making my life easy
00:07:14it's about these two having fun look at that
00:07:21George with his distinctive his distinctive gait
00:07:26and Yame who looks like a prancing pony
00:07:30oh that's so funny Yame looks like a prancing pony and George has got this very distinctive
00:07:39you know splayed splayed kind of hind quarters especially the foot region
00:07:48for those of you who don't know these two wonderful lions
00:07:54George and Yame coming up to nine years next year nine years old I cannot believe I'm saying that
00:08:02we've had these lions over eight and a half years and I remember the day these two little
00:08:12cubs arrived like it was yesterday I mean George and Yame coming on nine that's midlife in terms of a
00:08:20lion's life and a lot of people were not even sure that these lions would make one year of age
00:08:28due to the
00:08:30terrible conditions that they were kept in before they were rescued by the campaign against can hunting
00:08:36from a really awful place in Spain where they were being used as
00:08:43photographic props and they were being used for photographic opportunities for unsuspecting tourists
00:08:51for I think there was about five euro you could have a photo with the young
00:08:56Yame and George and uh yeah in order to keep these guys um ready for the interaction from the public
00:09:09they were fed a watered down cow's milk diet which is really no no substitute for lion's mother's milk
00:09:19and certainly not good enough to make sure that these two lions would uh would get the nutrition that
00:09:29they needed to obviously develop good bone health and good uh well bone structure and bone health
00:09:37and good um muscle development so George unfortunately bore the brunt of it
00:09:45Yame seem to weather the storm a lot better that's just genetics uh Yame seem to have stronger genetics
00:09:55but that doesn't stop old George oh whoa whoa you know I'm talking about you big boy that doesn't stop
00:10:02that lion he has well he has the heart of a lion and I think that's where the expression lion
00:10:11heart
00:10:12comes from I think they were thinking of a lion like George and and of course also Yame because don't
00:10:19forget Yame he endured all the same things and he was also worse for wear when uh he was eventually
00:10:28confiscated and uh sent to a place where they did a really good job of getting them to a certain
00:10:37state
00:10:37um or certain condition until they were strong enough and healthy enough to be shipped out here to South Africa
00:10:46where I was convinced to take them in and it was never my objective to take in any more rescues
00:11:01I must just say Yame has turned into one of the the nicest lions that I could ever have dreamt
00:11:10of working
00:11:10with what a lion what a beautiful lion in tip-top condition as I say he prances around like a
00:11:18pony
00:11:20but uh not an ounce of body fat on him and uh he's in his prime absolute prime I can't
00:11:27get ahead of him
00:11:27so as soon as I try and get ahead of him here he tends to want to run ahead of
00:11:32me okay there we go
00:11:34got ahead of him beautiful line look at that hello big boy the epitome of health this lion I mean
00:11:41there's not an ounce of fat on his body that over there is what we call the the belly fold
00:11:48and uh on
00:11:53Yame it is really just a tiny flap of skin because this lion seriously you can see the intercostal
00:12:03muscles there this lion seriously has not one ounce of body fat he's in tip-top shape
00:12:11hello boy
00:12:20no wait boy I can't let me go wide yeah there we go
00:12:31it's him looking for reaffirmation um when he kind of is looking at the lions over there in the
00:12:40south and the striped tahina there is giving george a run for his money but uh what that is is
00:12:48Yame coming to
00:12:49me looking for uh bonding and reaffirmation that we are brothers all right so while george
00:13:01and Yame walk along the southern boundary good time to talk about george
00:13:08oh he's heard something
00:13:13look at that walk distinctively george it cannot be any other lion
00:13:24why does he walk like that so this poor cat because of all of his nutritional deficiencies
00:13:32uh mostly vitamin A um he had very um bad bones bone development bone growth
00:13:42and uh as a result he had brittle bone disease um he had thickening of bone in areas where it
00:13:52shouldn't
00:13:52have well it shouldn't thicken so in the cranium on the spine and then because of the brittle bone disease
00:14:00the
00:14:02the uh calcanus bone collapsed where the achilles tendon attaches basically to the foot so if you
00:14:11think about our foot it's got that little kind of like spur where the achilles tendon attaches and that
00:14:17helps us in in having a spring in our step so to speak and the same thing with old george
00:14:23um it would cause the lion because the lions are digiti grade they walk on their digits not on their
00:14:29foot
00:14:30um so when the lion needs to jump or do some things like that then then that is
00:14:40what helps with that it's the achilles tendon
00:14:44i hope you guys do enjoy these videos uh watching these these cats as they go about their business
00:14:54on their enrichment walks which are thoroughly invigorating and exciting not only for them i will say
00:15:02that i also enjoy walking out in the bush i get my steps in i get my vitamin d and
00:15:09i get to see
00:15:12these wonderful guys more intimately
00:15:19okay they've actually been bloody good boys and we are walking back uh we've done like a full uh tour
00:15:27of
00:15:28this area we're actually walking back to his or to their enclosure so the camp that they came from
00:15:34um so that's good i'll try and get ahead and just open the gate lure them in okay it's open
00:15:43let's see if they come in
00:15:49oh what a good boy yeah yeah
00:15:57thing about lions is they're not stupid
00:16:02they know yeah no no no yummy yummy yummy yummy gorgeous done the right thing here

00:18:06um behind me and i'm gonna let them out and see what they want to do and ah where they
00:18:13want to go
00:18:18slipping and sliding in the mud oh so good to see fun fun fun

00:20:05go come on
00:20:11oh yes he's going nuts up there i don't even know i can't go up there guys i've got to
00:20:16go the long way
00:20:17around here comes his nutter brother slip sliding oh he's falling in the water
00:20:26he slipped down the back yummy that was not graceful look at him he's going like a nutter
00:20:32out of hell wow i've never seen him run like that that is so awesome and he's gone back to
00:20:39the car
00:20:39and he's jumping in he's saying i've had enough george says i'm not stupid i'm not going that way
00:20:44or no george is deciding he's going to follow suit this should be funny this should be funny he's
00:20:50going to fall in the water well george is not running on the embankment with such gusto but that's
00:20:58where yamme fell what a laugh he's falling in the water
00:21:16oh now they're getting cocky with each other yeah george is not impressed that
00:21:23yamme tried to embarrass him look at yamme oh puffing up puffing up let's see if he goes in
00:21:49he's digging for diamonds oh yamme he's having a nice swim not often you see a lion in the water
00:21:57like
00:21:57that yummy these guys are nuts they are having an absolute blaster this dam has been so well worth
00:22:16rehabilitating uh it's just such a joy to come down here and uh yeah let them just
00:22:26go nuts spread their wings run about burn off some energy burn of some frustration give me a good
00:22:34laugh i'll give you a good laugh and uh yeah when all is said and done they go back to
00:22:41the the car and
00:22:42uh they go and talk about it they can they go and instagram it on their their lion instagram accounts
00:22:50hello Buddha yeah booty yamma yamma what a stunning cat oh hello boy oh okay confident confidence
00:23:12he said all um all signs of confidence is you know getting out of where he was his his smaller
00:23:22camp
00:23:23getting into the bigger camp he has no idea who actually is in here and he walks around strutting his
00:23:30stuff as if he owns the place and that is yum yum probably gonna scratch this tree because he always
00:23:37does that
00:23:44okay just wanted to keep quiet there so you could hear him um scratching the bark of that tree that
00:23:52tree
00:23:53shame it always uh it always gets a hammering from from the lions um what is the scratching the scratching
00:24:01is really him again marking a couple of years ago i would have referred to as yummy as a young
00:24:05lion now i'm
00:24:06not so sure because he's coming on 11 years of age so he's george and uh while we're talking about
00:24:12yum
00:24:14yum yum he's yeah he's he's got a full a full mane there's georgie marking yeah he's marking with his
00:24:23cheek
00:24:23glands guys so that's cheek glands he's got glands in his cheeks and now scent perfect demonstration
00:24:33uh these two lions are originally from europe uh his name yame is shortened for ngon yama
00:24:45ngon yama is uh um a zulu word for lion the the ngo is uh highest and then yama is
00:24:55flesh
00:24:56so he's the highest of the flesh so basically meaning that he is the king the king of meat
00:25:06uh george and yama were named it was a competition
00:25:09that was held to name them when they were rescued from europe this large area is around about 50 hectares
00:25:18um yeah sometimes i wish it was a hundred sometimes i wish it was a thousand hectares but at the
00:25:29end of
00:25:29the day guys hello my boy
00:25:36georgie
00:25:40you're a crazy cat you know what he's saying
00:25:45he's saying kev why are you giving yummy all the limelight i also want to be on camera george i'm
00:25:53saving the best till last man yeah come dude can i finish with yummy oh georgie stealing the limelight
00:26:08george who i will get to now the lion that can george the boss boss line hey georgie please don't
00:26:22run
00:26:28the lion that doesn't want to be left behind okay so george was named after george adamson and we
00:26:40often say he was named after george at the sanctuary george is one of my colleagues he's he's worked
00:26:46with me for many years now and uh yeah he knows these animals uh inside out a raffle was held
00:26:54to
00:26:54raise money to bring george and yame to south africa and yeah ngonyama yame was the one prize winner name
00:27:04named him and the other prize winner named george george oh my gosh now we've got to this area and
00:27:11it's always this group of lions so it's thor's group guys thor's group then they start getting clever
00:27:18with each other now we're gonna have roaring or attempted roaring
00:27:26yummy strutting his stuff look at him
00:27:33look at the difference in muscle and gait hello boy
00:27:44looking for reaffirmation that i'm part of his team
00:27:50so unfortunately the mechanical nature of his walk will never change that's how it is guys look how he
00:27:58walks
00:28:01he's got swagger i will say that and
00:28:08the other thing we will say about george is that this lion never ever gives up we often have the
00:28:15phrase or the catchphrase be like george we say that because whenever somebody's moaning
00:28:25then i just say be like george because if there's any being that has something to moan about
00:28:31it's george he was really delta a bad hand of cards but george has taken that hand and he's made
00:28:41the most
00:28:42and he is an example to all of us human beings who think we have it so bad and always
00:28:49when i'm feeling
00:28:50sorry for myself i do think of george and i think just of how he's adapted and
00:28:57yeah how he just he just navigates life without moaning and groaning and
00:29:04actually so much so that he is the the pride leader
00:29:08he's the leader of the pride between george and yame
00:29:11which is hard to believe but it's true okay enough of that boy let's go come come let's go let's
00:29:19go
00:29:19let's go this cat this cat this cat don't break my pole
00:29:32come let's go yum come yum
00:29:37george not wanting to be behind
00:30:00george not nice come let's go come come
00:30:08come you too come come
00:30:16so that that little scuffle over there is
00:30:20just george putting yame in his place saying
00:30:25i'm the leader i want to be first stop stop being in front of me and
00:30:34it just blows my mind how yame just sucks it up
00:30:38because actually yame is so much thicker set than george if he had to lose it
00:30:45i think george would come off second best but george has got this attitude
00:30:49and it's quite incredible that attitude is respected so there guys is another quality of george
00:30:57george the lion he has this this spirit that uh yeah i don't think uh i don't think uh
00:31:06i don't think yame um wants to mess with
00:31:10it's quite incredible to see yame just
00:31:14back off and back down and this has been going on for years i mean this is yame used to
00:31:19be the more
00:31:19dominant one and then george just decided one day that he's going to yeah he's going to take over this
00:31:25group anyway that was our little water hole guys it's no longer it's just a mud pit no longer do
00:31:32we
00:31:33have water we are waiting for the rain hey grumpiness
00:31:42you're a grumpy cat
00:31:49hello my boy
00:32:15okay
00:32:17okay
00:32:39hello
00:32:40hello you got beaver
00:32:42you there
00:32:49okay
00:32:53hey George didn't even need the the ramp today literally um you know almost jumped in on his
00:33:00on his own accord um so yeah I can see these two have a lot of energy that needs to
00:33:08be dissipated
00:33:09and let's see how how they go about doing that hopefully not on me so already we have a problem
00:33:18uh George can't proceed any further he says he's going to get stuck
00:33:26okay see here's the road that George is talking about it's a new road yeah okay
00:33:43this is the problem with all the rain we've really welcomed the rain
00:33:53but now
00:33:57it has caused havoc
00:34:11you crazy cat
00:34:16oh no my boy
00:34:24oh it's muddy here
00:34:47yesterday yum you're a crazy cat no man no you're mad
00:35:05oh my goodness George is digging

00:47:08I've been pretty good today.
00:47:09Haven't been talking that much.
00:47:11Just been enjoying the boys splashing around in the water.
00:47:15Going nuts.
00:47:17But while I catch up to them, I thought, good opportunity to showcase my Georgie and Yamae
00:47:24T-Mill tea.
00:47:26I think it's really, really cool.
00:47:29Very nice fit.
00:47:30Good quality.

00:48:00Find the fence, boy.
00:48:01You're crazy.
00:48:03Come on, boy.
00:48:07What are you doing?
00:48:08I'm in a lion sandwich here.
00:48:09Come on.
00:48:10Alright, good morning, good morning, good morning.
00:48:12Today, we're going to be taking Georgie and Yamae out for a walk.
00:48:16But it's not just any enrichment walk.
00:48:19It is a birthday walk.
00:48:38Happy birthday, my boy.
00:48:41Happy birthday.
00:48:42Yeah.
00:48:43Happy birthday, Georgie.
00:49:12Happy birthday today.
00:49:15Alright, off you go.
00:49:17Off you go.
00:49:19Let's go.
00:49:20Where are we going?
00:49:21Where are we going?
00:49:22Oh.
00:49:48Today, Georgia and Yamae turn eleven.
00:49:52so it's their 11th birthday and what does that mean well guys in lion years
00:49:59especially male lions that is getting on in age i would say they're no longer spring chickens
00:50:08definitely in the wild would have been past their prime
00:50:13you know so in a lion world it's kind of live fast die young but in captivity especially if
00:50:18they've had a good life good nutrition good exercise etc then they do tend to live longer and we
00:50:27regularly have lions here at the sanctuary living past 20.
00:50:33Behind the fence boy you're crazy hello crazy cat hello hello crazy cat
00:50:46happy birthday
00:51:35Yeah.
00:51:55Oh!
00:52:29oh man
00:52:36next level
00:52:44these golden orb spiders have made webs everywhere
00:52:52ah man if you have a phobia of spiders look at that
00:53:07yeah if you've got a phobia of spiders i don't suggest this walk
00:53:15these two are full of beans today
00:53:19um happy birthday george and nyame
00:53:2311th birthday i can't believe i'm saying that
00:53:27these guys still feel like they are cubs to me
00:53:31and uh far yeah the second youngest lot of lions
00:53:40at the sanctuary so we do consider him consider them the the youngsters
00:53:55so
00:53:58so
00:54:00so
00:54:25You can see the way George is not as sure-footed as Yameh
00:54:29behind George in front just take a look at the way they walk especially George's
00:54:37hindquarters you'll see that the the hind quarters flare out whereas this guy
00:54:46is full of muscle perfect alignment and he just seriously is the epitome of
00:54:54health he looks incredible an incredibly amazing lion Yameh in the early days had
00:55:01his issues George was affected physiologically and anatomically Yameh was
00:55:11affected psychologically so Yameh was like really used to lash out at his
00:55:19caregivers through the fence obviously he used to come charging the fence really
00:55:24aggressive in nature he was super super agro line but Yameh at 11 is firstly one
00:55:33of the smartest lines I know don't let George hear me say that but he is really
00:55:40smart he's switched on he understands exactly what you are trying to get him
00:55:46to do or you know what you're asking of him he he looks at you and he you can see
00:55:53that something's going on in that head not saying that George is not he's not the
00:55:58smartest a lion or not the sharpest tool in the shed but definitely Yameh has got
00:56:04something about him George on the other hand was and is the sweetest lion as a cub as a
00:56:21cub George was just super super gentle hello yum yeah as a cub George was just super super gentle super
00:56:31loving
00:56:31that's uh that's uh transcended age um and that's definitely carried over into his uh older years
00:56:43uh but and I say but he does have a streak a George streak where when he wants something
00:56:53yeah it's hard to stop him he just goes after it and he gets super excited and he can also
00:57:00get
00:57:02uh really ugly with his brother um and surprisingly
00:57:08you know he's the more slender or gracile of the two but yet he's incredibly feisty
00:57:20hence why at the sanctuary when somebody is complaining I always say to them can't you just be
00:57:28more like George um be be like George be more like George because George despite his impediments
00:57:37he does not he does not uh complain now these lions have walked to this
00:57:44far corner and they are engaging with the sixth Thor's group and Thor's group
00:57:52is obviously the youngest group of lions here at the sanctuary and they like to engage that's for
00:58:00sure so we might be stuck here for a good two or three minutes maybe 10 until they get bored
00:58:06and they
00:58:07realize that they can uh move on um and then uh yeah we'll be on our walk
00:58:15hello monster you can't bulldoze me like that my boy you become such a bulldozer
00:58:24you two are such bulldozers here's my boy come let's go come come boys come boy
00:58:37what are you doing i'm in a lion sandwich here come come ah come Georgie come no time for
00:58:44mucking around mind the fence come let's go he's done that does
00:58:56come let's go
00:59:30Ta ta ta ta ta ta!
00:59:34Stop it now boy!
00:59:36Hey, honestly.
01:00:17I'm coming for some love.

01:00:46I don't know what's worse guys.
01:00:50Spiderwebs?
01:00:52Or blackjacks?
01:00:54Or tall grass?
01:01:01Certainly are a variety of things to wander through in this camp.
01:01:07So, yeah.
01:01:35Yes, he always wants to be in front, eh?
01:01:45All right.
01:01:47Uber has arrived.
01:01:52And George is very keen to get in.
