It snowed 30 inches (76 cm) in less than 12 hrs but I was comfy and warm in my dugout shelter (snow cave) under 10 feet (3 meters) of snow. I built a mass snow cave the size of a small cabin carved from the snow in the Alaskan Mountains. But while the solo camping was comfortable, the return home was very not, my poor car was buried and it took me 3 hrs to dig myself to freedom and only after a lot of help from strangers.

06:03Let's go.
06:40There we go.
07:14Let's go.
07:33Let's go.
08:05This is a pretty cozy little shelter.
08:19I'll tell you what, that is a beautiful view.
08:29I've got room to sit down, cook, sleep, and this is perfect.
08:33And it only took me four hours to make this thing, which is a lot less time than some of
08:37my other snow shelters.
08:39Let's go.
08:40Let's go.
08:40Let's go.
09:09Oh, this smells so good.
09:14Let's go.
09:41A beautiful chicken mango curry.
09:58Oh, that was good.
10:00Let's go.
10:06Let's go.
10:13Let's go.
10:23Let's go.
10:24Let's go.
10:25Let's go.
10:30Let's go.
10:42Let's go.
11:07Check for leaks and put the hot water bottle in my sleeping bag.
11:11Get all nice and toasty.
11:13I'll tell you what, this is just one of the best snow shelters I've ever made.
11:17There's a couple key features that are really important to keeping you warm.
11:20First off, you don't want your sleeping area to be the lowest point in the shelter.
11:24The cold air tends to collect at the bottom.
11:27Another thing is you want to make sure your snow shelter has lots of corners.
11:31You don't want to allow the wind to blow straight into your snow shelter.
11:35Additionally, when you do have a corner, make a little extra room.
11:39So when the wind comes down, it goes past the door instead of being funneled into the door.
11:47Likewise, on this end, I've got two entrances so that if the wind blows crosswise,
11:52the wind continues through the shelter instead of getting funneled down into the shelter.
11:56But I'm going to get a chance to really test the shelter out.
11:59It's supposed to be a pretty good snowstorm tonight.
12:01We'll see what happens.
12:04Looks like I had some shit on my face.
12:06The snow here is really soft.
12:09Hopefully, it'll freeze really good tonight.
12:11Then my stairs won't fall apart.
12:14The type and quality of the snow really affects how much energy it takes to build one of these shelters.
12:19This was really easy stuff to work with, so things went really fast.
12:23I moved a lot of snow in just four hours.
12:26The inside of this shelter is about five feet wide, and the roof is a little bit over six feet
12:31tall.
12:31So the very back of the shelter to the mouth is 11 feet.
12:35I had to move about 230 cubic feet of snow to excavate this part of the shelter.
12:40So at the bottom of the entrance to the top of the snow berm, it's a little over ten feet
12:45deep.
12:45But the original surface of the snow was about eight, eight and a half feet deep.
12:49The distance from here at the top of the stairs to the back of that wall is about 17 feet.
12:55Plus, there's this little bit I excavated right here.
12:57So my rough estimate is that I had to move about 423 cubic feet of snow to build this shelter.
13:03A little over 15 and a half cubic yards.
13:06That's the max capacity of a commercial dump truck.
13:09I earned my hot chocolate tonight.
13:17Well, it is getting late and it's getting cold.
13:20Got some peanuts for a bedtime snack.
13:30Well, it's getting late so I'm going to go ahead and eat some peanuts and listen to an audiobook and
13:34go to bed.
13:35But tomorrow I'm going to do something interesting.
13:37I'm going to see what it takes to make this tunnel collapse.
13:41I know a lot of people have wondered whether or not these snow caves will fall down on you.
13:45And honestly, I don't know. We'll test that out tomorrow.
13:49Oh, good morning.
13:51Oh, I'm nice and warm.
13:52I gotta get up and make some breakfast.
13:59Oh, look at this.
14:02Got a lot of snow last night.
14:06Oh yeah, that's got to be at least a foot.
14:08Consequently, the roof has sagged a little bit.
14:11It's about an inch or two shorter.
14:13I'm having to hunch over a lot more than I did last night.
14:16Snow caves will actually do that.
14:18They'll sag quite a bit over time.
14:20If you're going to use them for more than one day, often you have to re-dig out the roof.
14:24If you're a bit claustrophobic, you can make it hard to sleep at night knowing that the roof is slowly
14:29sagging over your face.
14:31All right, let's see if I can get my pants on.
14:34Oh, my pants are frozen.
14:53Steel-cut oatmeal and sliced spam for breakfast.
15:10All right, this steel-cut oatmeal is so good.
15:13Got some butter in there, brown sugar, raisins, a little hot spam to go with it.
15:26It's not bad at all.
15:27All right, well, I'm going to clean this place up and then we're going to go explore outside.
15:30We've got a lot of snow out there.
15:42All right, let's go see what it's like outside.
15:55It's a proper little snowstorm up here.
15:58It is really snowing.
16:00All of this fresh snow is going to make the avalanche danger go through the roof.
16:04Luckily, we're not in any avalanche zone, so we'll be okay.
16:07Above the ceiling right here, the snow's pretty thick, but yesterday I could see light shining through in that corner
16:13of the cave,
16:13which means there's less than two feet of snow between the ceiling and the surface of the snow.
16:17You can kind of see what I mean right here. There's this blue color.
16:20That's light shining through the snow right here.
16:23You can see that's about two feet of snow.
16:25So I'm really curious to see whether this roof can stand up to 200 pounds of me jumping up and
16:29down on it.
16:49I couldn't feel any movement.
16:55Yeah, it looks perfectly fine from here.
16:57Well, this one hasn't collapsed yet, but all snow caves collapse eventually.
17:02All right, I think it's time to get out of here.
17:09Oh, look how deep this snow is.
17:11Even with my snowshoes, it's going up to my kneecap.
17:14It's probably two and a half feet of fresh snow since yesterday.
17:17I got a sneaky suspicion that my car might be very stuck when I find it.
17:31I think I got some digging to do.
17:51Yeah, we got a good solid two feet of snow.
17:54I've got about a hundred yards of unplowed road to go.
17:59It's going to be tricky.
18:12We've got absolutely no visibility.
18:15Don't need visibility unless we can drive somewhere.
18:30Hey, not bad.
18:32I got like 75 feet with that.
18:35Let's dig it out and try it again.
18:45More power!
18:50More power!
18:57Maximum power!
19:12So I'm going to take my snowshoes and beat a path to the plowed road.
19:19Oh, that's a long way to go.
19:35I was giving it a bunch of throttle and it just popped on me.
19:38And I kind of smelled this burning smell.
19:40And now only two of the wheels are spinning.
19:42I think I boogered up the all wheel drive.
19:44I've got a gentleman in a big 4x4 pickup who might be able to help get me out.
19:51That's pretty sick.
19:55Oh, I'm about to go for a ride.
19:59Oh, we're doing it.
20:14That pickup truck was a monster.
20:16If it wasn't for that, I would have been here for a long time.
20:22Oh, it is nasty.
20:33I'm so glad you're home and safe.
20:35I was afraid of us.
20:37Yeah.
20:37Look at the car.
20:38It's smoking.
20:39Yeah.
20:39The car looks cleaner.
20:41Yeah, it does.
20:41Doesn't it?
20:43Oh, Betsy done good.
