00:00I could keep playing this part forever and never come to the end of her.
00:04I want to start by congratulating you on your performance in Long Day's Journey and Tonight.
00:07It is really something I think people should see. This is a character, if people don't know,
00:12you've spent many years with her. First, London's West End in 2000, reprised the role on Broadway,
00:18and won a Tony for it in 2016, and now this film. I'm curious how you think over these 26
00:26years
00:27you've been playing, Mary, that your performance, she's a quite turbulent character, morphine
00:33addicted. How has your performance evolved? This kind of truthfulness that O'Neill was writing with
00:41in his dedication to his wife at the time, Carlotta, he talks about a play written, a play of old
00:49sorrows
00:50written in tears and blood with great pity and forgiveness and understanding.
00:59So to me, it always felt like he was coming from such a deep sense of truth and laying it
01:09out there.
01:10I mean, it's so powerful in his storytelling that, to my mind, this play, this character is inexhaustible.
01:25This is the kind of character, the kind of role that, to my mind, you could play for the rest
01:32of your life
01:32and never exhaust.
